Content focuses on reader services and community programs at the Branch, mainly during the 1930s and 1940s, evoking the ethnic makeup of the Lower East Side, especially its Jewish heritage. A few later staff photos mark the transition from the "old HF" to the new location. less

The Emmett Grogan Papers is an archive of manuscripts and typescripts, comprising, articles, manifestos, screenplays, ideas for films, short stories, and poems by Emmett Grogan, accompanied by a group of similar writings by him and others that appeared in The Digger Papersa collective publication published by the Diggersboth parts of the archive spanning the years 1965-1968. Grogans papers document his journey from a young writer, aspiring filmmaker, and actor with the San Francisco Mime Troupe, to his central role, with Peter Berg, as the Diggers leading theoretician and activist. The archive contains early writings by Grogan from his time in Rome, Dublin, and London, and includes several of his most important Digger manifestos, some of them written with his boyhood friend and fellow New Yorker, Billy Murcott. Much of it bears his autograph annotations and corrections. less

The Brooke Russell Astor address books, dated circa 1959-1970s, identify her personal, social, political, and philanthropic contacts, including many prominent persons in the United States and abroad. The volumes are small commercially-bound black leather loose-leaf binders; contact information is typescript, with some handwritten entries and revisions. Entries under each alphabetical letter are arranged in three categories: Personal, Foreign, and Business. Useful contacts are found at the front of each book, along with details for her local and out-of-state residences. Loose cards and notes, most undated, have been removed to separate housing. Among them are two brief social notes, one from Chauncey [Chauncey Devereaux Stillman], 1963, and one on Plaza Hotel stationary from a visiting friend, 1960.
