Orvil Dryfoos (1912-1963) was a newspaper executive and the publisher of The New York Times from 1961 to 1963. The Orvil Dryfoos papers document Dryfoos's daily activities and the operations of The Times, particularly during his tenure as vice president, president, and publisher from 1954 to 1963. The collection also contains Dryfoos's private business papers and records concerning the Dryfoos family's finances, travels, and other personal matters. less

The New York City Gay Men's Chorus was founded in 1979, merging with the Big Apple Gay Men's Chorus in 1980. Karla Jay is a lesbian feminist activist, author, and former professor of English at Pace University (New York). The collection contains correspondence, typescripts, and other items chiefly documenting Jay's work as a professor of English and as author and coeditor of books on the experiences of lesbians and gay men. The bulk of the collection pertains to her work as a writer and academic and includes some documentation of her activities as a pioneer feminist and lesbian activist with the consciousness raising group Redstockings and the Gay Liberation Front. The correspondence includes letters from many prominent writers and gay and lesbian rights activists, her literary agent, publishers, contributors to her anthologies, and alternative presses, as well as with academic and professional organizations. The collection also includes typescript drafts of the text of The Gay Report (which she co-authored with Allen Young) and the questionnaires returned by lesbian respondents; drafts of Jay's dissertation and other writings; slides; and audio recordings, chiefly of interviews with Jay or conducted by her from the 1970s to the 1990s. Lore Segal is a New York based novelist and children's book author. A daughter of Austrian Jews, Segal escaped Nazi occupied Vienna on the first Kindertransport in 1939. This collection contains letters and documents of her family in Austria and England during World War II, and their emigration to the Dominican Republic and the United States; letters to Segal from throughout her life; letters from Segal as a young girl and documenting her time at Yaddo; and literary manuscripts documenting her novels, children's books, short stories and other writings. Gertrude Finkel (1898-1994) was a librarian with The New York Public Library, associated for many years with the Library's Hamilton Fish Park Branch on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. The Branch opened in 1909 at 388 East Houston Street, serving a predominantly immigrant population. It closed in 1958 to prepare for removal to a new location, reopening at 415 East Houston Street in 1960. The collection consists of a scrapbook (1 volume, disbound), dated 1931-1963, containing watercolor drawings and pasted photographs and clippings depicting activities at the Hamilton Fish Park Branch Library, accompanied by some loose items and personal correspondence of Gertrude Finkel, dated 1940-1970. Content focuses on reader services and community programs at the Branch, mainly during the 1930s and 1940s, evoking the ethnic makeup of the Lower East Side, especially its Jewish heritage. A few later staff photos mark the transition from the "old HF" to the new location. less

The Michael Horowitz collection on Timothy Leary reveals Horowitz's role as archivist, the history of the archive (most notably its seizure by the FBI in 1975), and his relationship with Leary. The Barry Miles file on Timothy Leary contains five letters from Leary to Miles dated 1969, and carbon copies of two of Miles' letters to Leary. The correspondence discusses legal cases that Leary was involved in and opportunities for promoting Leary and his message. The file also contains clippings that Miles collected on Leary, dating from 1966 to 1996. less

Joanna Harcourt-Smith (or Joanna Leary) met Timothy Leary when he was a fugitive in Europe after escaping from prison in 1970. She traveled with him to Afghanistan where he was apprehended by American authorities in 1973. Harcourt-Smith subsequently administered the Starseed Information Center, which published Leary's writings and advocated for his release while he served in prison from 1973 to 1976. The Joanna Harcourt-Smith papers related to Timothy Leary contain publications, correspondence, court documents, and ephemera related to Leary's life and work in the 1970s. A scrapbook created by Dennis Martino contains clippings, ephemera, and photographs, most of Harcourt-Smith. The collection also contains Harcourt-Smith's address book. less
