Edward F. Caldwell & Co. of New York City, founded in 1894, designed and manufactured lighting fixtures and ornamental bronze and ironworks. In 1957 the company re-emerged after tax liquidation as the E.T. Caldwell Lighting Company. The president was Edward T. Caldwell. Collection consists mainly of sketches, with correspondence, financial documents, design records, invoice books, ledgers and photographs from the Caldwell firm and additional business records of the Plastic Illuminating Company. Personal correspondence, 1958-1959, contains letters to Edward T. Caldwell from his friends and acquaintances. Business correspondence, 1956-1959, is with customers after the re-organization of the company. Financial documents, 1938-1957, include logs of transactions, bank statements and income tax returns. Draughtman's sketches of lighting fixtures are done in pen and ink. Group schedule of designs, 1930-1949, are sketches of multiple lighting fixtures required for specific jobs. Design records, 1900-1941, contain information and sketches of lighting fixtures. Invoice books, 1943-1946, include descriptions of materials shipped with prices and information about customers. Also, records of material received, 1955-1956; ledgers, 1953-1956; shipment records, 1951-1954; employees' salary records, 1953-1956; index to customers; and records, 1947-1957, of the Plastic Illuminating Company (probably a subsidiary of the Caldwell Company) including order books, receipts and disbursements, and checkbooks. George Kennan (1845-1924), American journalist, lecturer, and author, is best-known for his writings on Russia. He traveled extensively in Siberia from 1865-1867 with a Western Union telegraph surveying party, and again in 1885-1886 to research the Imperial Russian exile and prison systems. His writings and lectures influenced American policy and public opinion about Russia before the 1917 revolutions. In addition to his work on Siberia, Kennan covered the Spanish-American War and the Russo-Japanese War for the Outlook magazine. His papers include his correspondence and source documents collected from Russian exiles, a small amount of personal correspondence, drafts of manuscripts, a small number of photographs, and Kennan family papers. less

Members of the Van Cortlandt family were major Westchester County landowners and New York politicians from the 17th to the 19th century. The Van Wyck family was related to them by marriage. Collection consists of correspondence, accounts, legal documents, papers relating to land in New York owned by the Van Cortlandt family, estate papers, and wills. Correspondence, 1779-1912, concerns family, personal and real estate matters, the progress of the Revolutionary War, and political matters. There is a significant amount of correspondence between Pierre Van Cortlandt and his son Philip. Adeline Oppenheim Guimard (1872- ) was an American artist noted for her portraits in gouache and colored crayons. Her works were exhibited in Paris, New York and other cities in the U.S. She was married to Hector Guimard, a French architect and designer. Collection consists of correspondence, writings, family papers, photographs, sketches, and printed matter. Correspondence, 1902-1953, concerns Guimard's portraits and acknowledgements for works she donated to institutions. Writings include her papers on exhibitions and book of comments by patrons. Family papers contain letters and papers of her sister Nellie Oppenheim and Hector Guimard. Also, sketches by Adeline Guimard, photographs of her work, citations, awards, and assorted papers and photographs. less

Robert Hobart Davis (1869-1942) was an American journalist, editor, dramatist, and photographer. He was editor of Munsey's Magazine from 1904 to 1925, columnist for the New York Sun from 1925 to 1942, and honorary president of the Stevenson Society of America. Collection consists of correspondence, writings, clippings, printed matter, and photographs documenting Davis's career as an editor and writer and his hobby of photography. Letters reflect his personal as well as professional interests. Correspondents include editors, dramatists, illustrators, journalists, artists, and public figures. Writings contain typescripts and printed versions of works by Davis and a file of printed reviews of his books. Materials relating to the Stevenson Society of America, 1915-1930, include letters, printed matter, clippings, and reports. Photographs consist of approximately 375 portraits by Davis of friends and acquaintances, including prominent writers, artists, performers, and public figures. less

Robert Edward Lee (1807-1870) served as General of the Confederate Army in the U.S. Civil War and was president of Washington College in Lexington, Virginia from 1865 to 1870. Notebook was kept by Lee when he was an army engineer stationed at Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn, New York. Notebook consists of 53 leaves containing structural and technical sketches, mensural data, mathematical calculations, and architectural, engineering and surveying notes relating to Forts Hamilton, Morton, Richmond, Lafayette and Battery Hudson. less
