Beatrice Collings managed the Royal York hotel (and later, the Royal Albion) in Brighton, England, with her sister's husband, boxing and sports promoter Sir Harry Preston. The vistors' book includes photographs, autographs, sketches, caricatures, and remarks on the hotels from a variety of sports, theatrical, military, and other prominent figures. Robert Bonner (1824-1899) was a newspaper publisher and trotting horse breeder. He owned and published the New York Ledger. Collection consists of general correspondence, trotting horse papers, financial documents, writings, photographs, and artifacts. General correspondence includes letters to Bonner as proprietor of the New York Ledger, with a few drafts of his replies, mostly from contributors offering stories, suggesting plots, soliciting money, acknowledging remuneration, and relating to personal matters; letters from Presbyterian clergymen about church affairs; and letters from the owners of the New York Sun, New York Herald, and New York Times, revealing Bonner's willingness to lend financial aid to those newspapers. Papers relating to the breeding, development, and shoeing of trotting horses contain letters from owners, breeders, veterinarians, editors of sporting journals, and others from all parts of the United States, especially Kentucky; notes on horses; accounts; scrapbooks of newspaper clippings containing biographical data and other material on the horse and on the Scotch Irish Society of America; and photographs, sketches and artifacts. less

This logbook of the British ship of war H.M.S. Dryad contains entries made between February 22, 1831 and August 16, 1832. Commodore John Hays was its commanded and the tender, "Black Joke," was kept by C.W. Otway while the Dryad cruised off the west coast of Africa, touching at Sierra Leone, the Princes' Islands, and Ascension Island. From there, the ship traveled to Spithead, England. Edward Guthrie Kennedy (1849-1932) was an American art dealer, collector and connoisseur of books and prints. He began his career as an art dealer in Boston in the late 1860s. A decade later he joined the New York firm of Wunderlich & Company; in the 1890s he became head of the firm and changed the name to Kennedy & Company. Collection consists of letters and sketches sent to Kennedy by James McNeill Whistler and others. Letters, postcards and telegrams from Whistler, 1887-1902, concern the artist's work and social life in London and Paris. Also included are several illustrative sketches in ink and pencil. Remainder of the papers consists of letters to Kennedy from associates, 1910-1918, and copies of letters written by Whistler to persons other than Kennedy. less

The records of the Lavanburg Foundation contain meeting minutes and administrative files documenting the activities of the foundation, records of construction of the Lavanburg Villages, and files on grants awarded. Materials are organized in three series (Administrative Files, Lavanburg Villages Project, and Grants), and range in date from 1927 to 2011. The Fred L. Lavanburg Foundation was established in 1927 as a low-income, non-profit housing corporation for families with children who were unable to find housing elsewhere. The Lavanburg Homes were constructed in Manhattan in 1927, and in 1956, were donated to New York City. In the 1960s, the Lavanburg Foundation took on a second construction project, building the Lavanburg Villages in the Bronx. From 1927 to 2006, the Lavanburg Foundation also provided seed-money grants to organizations assisting in the foundation's mission of providing better housing and social support for low-income families. Alaska on a trip from Panama to Peru, where the ship docked at Arica, Coquimbo, Callao, Ancud, Mollendo, Pisco, and Chimbote. Mentions blockade and some battles of the Tacna Arica dispute between Chile and Peru. From Peru, the ship sailed to Ave Maria Bay (Nu Khiva) [sic], Marquesas Islands; and Samoa, where the ship docked at Pago Pago and Apia. From there, the ship traveled to Honolulu, San Francisco, and Mare Island, California. Also included are sketches; a letter to Thompson dated Sept. 20, 1881; and letters dated 1877 from "Warren" (perhaps a relative), who served as a sailor on the ship Independence on a trip from Boston to Valparaiso and Iquique, Chile. less

John Chalmers, an officer in the British Navy, kept this journal during a naval expedition to l'Orient, France from September 15-October 29, 1746. The British forces intended to take l'Orient, depot of the French East India Company, but the expedition ended in complete failure.
