The collection consists of correspondence and other papers of prominent members of the interrelated McKim and Garrison families collected by Margaret McKim Maloney and others. Included are papers of architect Charles Follen McKim, abolitionists James Miller McKim, William Lloyd Garrison, James H. Garrison, and their descendants. Papers of James Miller McKim, 1828-1882, contain correspondence, accounts, family and personal miscellany, and clippings. Papers of his son Charles Follen McKim, 1857-1908, include correspondence, his diary of a walking tour in 1863, speeches, personal miscellany, and a sketch by Charles Dana Gibson, and printed matter. Also included is correspondence of Margaret McKim Maloney, Wendell Phillips Garrison, William Lloyd Garrison, Jr., Frank J. Garrison, Moncure Conway, Wendell Phillips, and Edward and Mathilda Kyllman.

He traveled extensively in Siberia from 1865-1867 with a Western Union telegraph surveying party, and again in 1885-1886 to research the Imperial Russian exile and prison systems. His writings and lectures influenced American policy and public opinion about Russia before the 1917 revolutions. In addition to his work on Siberia, Kennan covered the Spanish-American War and the Russo-Japanese War for the
Outlook magazine. His papers include his correspondence and source documents collected from Russian exiles, a small amount of personal correspondence, drafts of manuscripts, a small number of photographs, and Kennan family papers.

Edward F. Caldwell & Co. of New York City, founded in 1894, designed and manufactured lighting fixtures and ornamental bronze and ironworks. In 1957 the company re-emerged after tax liquidation as the E.T. Caldwell Lighting Company. The president was Edward T. Caldwell. Collection consists mainly of sketches, with correspondence, financial documents, design records, invoice books, ledgers and photographs from the Caldwell firm and additional business records of the Plastic Illuminating Company. Personal correspondence, 1958-1959, contains letters to Edward T. Caldwell from his friends and acquaintances. Business correspondence, 1956-1959, is with customers after the re-organization of the company. Financial documents, 1938-1957, include logs of transactions, bank statements and income tax returns. Draughtman's sketches of lighting fixtures are done in pen and ink. Group schedule of designs, 1930-1949, are sketches of multiple lighting fixtures required for specific jobs. Design records, 1900-1941, contain information and sketches of lighting fixtures. Invoice books, 1943-1946, include descriptions of materials shipped with prices and information about customers. Also, records of material received, 1955-1956; ledgers, 1953-1956; shipment records, 1951-1954; employees' salary records, 1953-1956; index to customers; and records, 1947-1957, of the Plastic Illuminating Company (probably a subsidiary of the Caldwell Company) including order books, receipts and disbursements, and checkbooks. Leo Spier's letters, in German, to his mother, who was E.T. Caldwell's housekeeper, are restricted.

He was editor of Munsey's Magazine from 1904 to 1925, columnist for the New York Sun from 1925 to 1942, and honorary president of the Stevenson Society of America. Collection consists of correspondence, writings, clippings, printed matter, and photographs documenting Davis's career as an editor and writer and his hobby of photography. Letters reflect his personal as well as professional interests. Correspondents include editors, dramatists, illustrators, journalists, artists, and public figures. Writings contain typescripts and printed versions of works by Davis and a file of printed reviews of his books. Alaska on a trip from Panama to Peru, where the ship docked at Arica, Coquimbo, Callao, Ancud, Mollendo, Pisco, and Chimbote. Mentions blockade and some battles of the Tacna Arica dispute between Chile and Peru. From Peru, the ship sailed to Ave Maria Bay (Nu Khiva) [sic], Marquesas Islands; and Samoa, where the ship docked at Pago Pago and Apia. From there, the ship traveled to Honolulu, San Francisco, and Mare Island, California. General correspondence includes letters to Bonner as proprietor of the New York Ledger, with a few drafts of his replies, mostly from contributors offering stories, suggesting plots, soliciting money, acknowledging remuneration, and relating to personal matters; letters from Presbyterian clergymen about church affairs; and letters from the owners of the New York Sun, New York Herald, and New York Times, revealing Bonner's willingness to lend financial aid to those newspapers. Edward Guthrie Kennedy (1849-1932) was an American art dealer, collector and connoisseur of books and prints. He began his career as an art dealer in Boston in the late 1860s. A decade later he joined the New York firm of Wunderlich & Company; in the 1890s he became head of the firm and changed the name to Kennedy & Company. Collection consists of letters and sketches sent to Kennedy by James McNeill Whistler and others. Letters, postcards and telegrams from Whistler, 1887-1902, concern the artist's work and social life in London and Paris. Also included are several illustrative sketches in ink and pencil. Remainder of the papers consists of letters to Kennedy from associates, 1910-1918, and copies of letters written by Whistler to persons other than Kennedy.

Edwin Willard Deming (1860-1942) was an American painter and sculptor. He studied in New York and Paris and painted scenes from his visits with Indian groups in the Southwest and West of the U.S. Collection consists of correspondence of Deming with his family plus four photographs. Letters were written while he attended the Art Students League in New York City, and from Chicago, Mexico and Paris. Some of the letters include sketches done by Deming illustrating his experiences.

Charles Robert Knight (1874-1953) was an artist, writer and paleontologist. He did paintings and models of prehistoric animals for the U.S. government and museums in New York City and elsewhere. He also painted a series of murals for the American Museum of Natural History. In addition to his art work, Knight wrote books and articles on animal anatomy and psychology and on prehistoric man. Collection consists of correspondence, writings, sketches, photographs, and printed matter. Correspondence, 1892-1952, is with museums, libraries, societies, academic institutions, magazine and newspaper publishers, and associates and relates to Knight's work as an artist and writer. Family correspondence, 1885-1949, includes letters between Knight and Hardcastle family members. Correspondence of Lucy Knight Steel, 1847-1964, concerns her father's work as well as her work and family. Writings of Charles R. Knight contain typescripts and drafts of his work, including his autobiography. Also, papers of the Hardcastle and Steel families, photographs of Knight and his work, sketches, and printed matter.
