Frank Weitenkampf (1866-1962) worked for the New York Public Library for 61 years. He started as a page at the Astor Library in 1881, became head of the NYPL Art Department, and served as Curator of Prints from 1921 until his retirement in 1942. Weitenkampf wrote several books and numerous articles on prints, was a print collector, and corresponded with artists and other collectors. Early in his career he used the pseudonym Frank Linston White. Collection consists of Weitenkampf's correspondence and his writings. Letters, spanning the years 1888-1962, include those received by Weitenkampf and drafts of his replies. A portion of the letters relates to Weitenkampf's official duties at NYPL. There are rarely more than a few letters from any one individual except for the following: Samuel P. Avery (1822-1904), a merchant and art collector; Edwin D. French (1851-1906), an engraver; and Julius J. Lankes (1884-1960), who was a printmaker specializing in woodcuts. The rest of the collection consists of Weitenkampf's own writings, both published and unpublished. Two of the manuscript works, Social History of the United States in Caricature and American Life in American Prints, are valuable for locating visual source material for American history. Living in One Man's Reading is a typed collection of quotations that appealed to Weitenkampf. Copies of his published works are all annotated by Weitenkampf with corrections or additions to the text. There is also an 8-volume scrapbook containing clippings of articles written by Weitenkampf, clippings mentioning him, and a few letters from editors concerning his articles. less

Mary Gould Davis (1882-1956) was an author, editor, children's librarian, and storyteller. She wrote books for children and edited collections of verse. Collection contains correspondence, clippings and other materials concerning Davis. Correspondence consists of letters received by Davis from authors, illustrators and publishers regarding children's books and storytelling. Also, some letters received by her sister, Perley B. Israel David Fishman (1938-) is best known for founding the Task Force on Gay Liberation (TFGL), a section of the Social Responsibilities Round Table of the American Libraries Association. His papers document the early years of TFGL, Fishman's collaboration with other activists, and the issues surrounding being an openly gay professional in the late-1960s and early-1970s. less

The New York Library Club was founded at Columbia College in 1885 by Melvil Dewey for the purpose of promoting libraries and librarianship in New York City and its environs. The collection dates from 1885 to 2002 and contains administrative material, including meeting minutes, correspondence, financial records, and membership and programming materials. less

Dr. Victor Hugo Paltsits (1867-1952) was an archivist, librarian, and New York State Historian who served as Keeper of Manuscripts for the New York Public Library from 1914 to 1941. Collection consists of correspondence of both a professional and personal nature; greeting cards to and from Paltsits; a certificate from the Upper Missouri Historical Expedition; drafts of an address on public records; drafts of writings; clippings and biographical material; a typescript copy of his address, "The Beginnings of Presbyterianism in Albany," and related ephemera. The professional correspondence largely relates to his work as New York State historian, 1909 to 1911. less

Letters, photographs,an interview transcript, and other material by or about Esther Johnston, a librarian who began her career with the New York Public Library in 1916, and who retired as Chief of the Circulation Department in 1951. Letters are from friends and colleagues, and chiefly concern her retirement. The transcribed interview was conducted in 1965 by library historian Phyllis Dain, and discusses Johnston's career with the Library. Several offprints of articles about literature and librarianship written by Johnston are also included, as is an undated draft of an article titled "Dancing with Doughboys," recounting her participation with civilian relief groups in France in 1918. Marilla Waite Freeman was born in Honeoye Falls, New York, in 1870. After receiving a degree in literature from the University of Chicago in 1897, Freeman became a librarian. Her career included positions with the the Newberry Library, St. Joseph's Hosipital, and various public libraries, including those in Michigan City, Indiana; Davenport, Iowa; Newark, New Jersey; and Cleveland, Ohio. She also published numerous essays on literacy, poetry, and the importance of literature. She died in Yonkers, New York, in 1961. The papers consist largely of correspondence and ephemera relating to her support of the Academy of American Poets. Some personal correspondence with friends, family members, and authors is present, including several exchanges with Frieda Lawrence, wife of D.H. Lawrence, relating to books written about Lawrence, as well as a testimonial from the Commissioners of the Goodwyn Institute of Memphis presented to Freeman on the event of her departure from the institute less
