The American Dramatic Fund Association was founded in New York City in 1848 for the purpose of aiding members of the theatrical profession (actors, dancers and singers) who were unable to work, helping to support members' widows and orphans, and defraying funeral expenses of members. The organization has been known as the Actors' Fund of America since 1882. Collection consists of correspondence and records of the American Dramatic Fund Association. Correspondence concerns donations and applications for membership and financial assistance. John Foster Carr (1869-1939), lecturer and author, promoted the education and Americanization of immigrants, particularly Italian immigrants. He was founder and director of the Immigrant Publication Society; was active in the American Library Association (ALA), promoting the "Books for Everybody" campaign in New York City; and helped with the ALA's book drive for U.S. armed forces, ca. 1918-1920. He wrote a series of guides to the U.S. for Italian, Jewish and Polish immigrants; and wrote or edited other books and articles on immigration, libraries, Thomas Jefferson, and the Declaration of Independence. Collection contains correspondence, materials relating to "Books for Everybody" campaign, writings by Carr and his family, photographs, and printed matter. Correspondence, 1909-1940, concerns his activities as director of the Immigrant Publication Society, his series of guides for immigrants, speaking engagements, and personal and family matters. "Books for Everybody" materials include legal and financial records, notes, memoranda, and scrapbook of clippings. Writings by Carr consist of manuscripts and typescripts of his speeches on immigrants and Americanization, drafts of articles and projected biographies; galleys and printed copy of book by his wife Emma Lilian Dana; and manuscripts of sermons, 1801-1830, by his great grandfather, Rev. The 9/11 United Services Group was formed in December 2001 to facilitate, expedite, and enhance coordination of services among various charities and agencies in the aftermath of the September 11th terrorist attacks. The September 11th Fund, the American Red Cross, the Salvation Army, and Safe Horizon were responsible for spearheading this collaborative charitable response after recognizing the need for coordinated service. The 9/11 United Services Group records hold administrative files, service coordination files, and files from the Ongoing Needs Study and the Framework for the Coordinated Delivery of Social Services in Future Major Emergencies report. There are also documents outlining the group's Financial Advice Referral Program and files documenting its work with victim advocacy and community relations. less

Charles Patrick Daly (1816-1899) was an American jurist, lecturer and writer who served as a judge of the New York City Court of Common Pleas for over forty years, the last twenty-seven as chief justice. Maria Lydig Daly, his wife, was active in the Democratic Party and various welfare organizations of the Civil War period. Her diaries of this period were published in 1962 under the title: Diary of a Union Lady, 1861-1865.
