The Frederick O'Neal Papers document the theatrical, labor, and civic activities of this actor and labor leader, mostly from the 1940s through the 1990s. The collection consists primarily of personal papers, correspondence, speeches and addresses, writing, and information about the theatrical productions in which he appeared. There are also research materials about the 19th century African-American actor, Ira Aldridge, and files pertaining to the many organizations with which O'Neal was associated. less

Philip Loeb (1894-1955) was an American stage and television actor. He worked at a number of theaters in New York as an actor, stage manager and casting director. He also taught at the Americ.an Academy of Dramatic Arts. In the 1930s he joined the Actors' Equity Association and was a member of its Executive Committee. He was accused of being a communist supporter and was blacklisted after being summoned by the House Committee on Un-American Activities in 1951. Collection consists of correspondence, Loeb's personal papers and printed matter. Correspondence, 1937-1955, includes letters concerning his alleged communist activities. Personal papers contain materials relating to his involvement with Actors' Equity, 1940-1954; House Committee on Un-American Activities, 1951; American Academy of Dramatic Arts, 1953; legal documents, 1913-1948; and financial records, 1932-1955. The collection contains correspondence, speeches, accounts, clippings, scripts and other papers reflecting the personal and professional life of Francis Wilson. Wilson carried on an active correspondence with many contemporaries prominent in the theatrical or literary field. The large series of speeches illustrates his wide-ranging interests. There is material on the plays in which he appeared, especially ERMINIE, and information on his involvement with the Players Club, but very little documenting his role as first president of the Actors' Equity Association or on the pivotal strike he led in 1919. The main political battle documented in these papers is Wilson's efforts to keep child actors out from under the jurisdiction of state labor laws. There is also some information on Wilson's family and his personal financial transactions. less

The Chamberlain and Lyman Brown Papers are 351 linear feet and contain business and personal correspondence, scrapbooks, autographs, legal and financial papers, scripts, photographs, clipping files, and production materials documenting their work as theatrical agents, managers, and producers. The papers provide a history of the entertainment industry from the end of the 19th century through the middle of the 20th century. A number of family and personal papers are also included. less

Alan Hewitt (1915-1986) was an American actor who worked in theater, television, and film. He was active in issues of actors' employment, and was involved with the Actors Equity Association (Equity) for most of his career. His work with Equity included serving on the council from 1940 to 1951 and serving as the organization's unofficial statistician. He also conducted income studies for the Screen Actors Guild (SAG). The Alan Hewitt papers concern his work with and on behalf Equity and SAG and his advocacy in matters of actors' employment. Subjects of the Equity files include a report on Equity employment statistics authored by Philip Ennis and John Bonin; Equity's policy on the employment of alien actors from 1951 to 1968; and the work of the Equity House Affairs Committee from 1976 to 1980, especially related to the matter of dues. Equity files primarily contain correspondence and clippings, but also include statistical reports, meeting minutes, annual financial reports, and Hewitt's notes and writings. SAG files contain correspondence and reports regarding the income of SAG membership in the late 1960s and 1970s. Some correspondence with SAG leadership concerning issues affecting both unions is also present in the Equity files. Hewitt was a proponent of a merger between SAG and AFTRA, and the collection contains files of correspondence, writings, and clippings regarding a potential merger, as well as materials about possibly mergers between Equity and other unions, dating from 1949 and 1958. The collection also includes a memoir by Maybelle Cliff (née Parker). Cliff was an American vaudeville performer who married British performer Laddie Cliff. The memoir recounts her experiences living in Great Britain from 1916 to 1941. less

Actor and director Frederick O'Neal (1905-1992) was best known for co-founding the American Negro Theatre (ANT) with playwright Abram Hill in 1940. O'Neal was also active in the leadership of a number of professional, cultural, and labor organizations. The collection consists of seventeen sound recordings and two video recordings documenting O'Neal's activities in three organizations: the Actors' Equity Association (AEA), the American Federation of Labor-Congress of International Organizations (AFL-CIO), and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), from 1962 to 1989. less

The Brooks Atkinson papers contain correspondence, awards, personal papers, photographs, ephemera, scrapbooks, datebooks, clippings and subject files and document his life and career as a drama critic for the New York Times. The papers span the years 1904-1980. Significant in the correspondence are letters from notables figures of the theater community including writers, actors, scholars and other journalists. Included in these are Sean O'Casey, Tennessee Williams, Thornton Wilder, Eugene and Carlota O'Neill, Robert W. Anderson, Maxwell Anderson, Clifford Odets, Moss Hart and George S. The papers of Lucille Lortel relate the details of her life and career from teen years to her death in 1999, and include correspondence, production files, scripts, programs, production photographs, personal and family photographs, organization files, clippings, memorabilia, and scrapbooks. Lucille Lortel's life spanned the twentieth century, so in addition to providing details of her family and personal life her papers encompass many aspects of the theatrical history of her era. Lortel is credited with fostering the Off-Broadway movement and providing a forum for avant-garde and experimental work at her Theatre de Lys. Lortel's productions at the White Barn and the ANTA Matinee Series at the Theatre de Lys brought works by Jean Genet, Sean O'Casey, Athol Fugard, and others to a wider audience. Many of these productions are represented in the collection by correspondence, programs, photographs and clippings. Over the years Lortel also worked closely with several non-profit theaters as a donor and mentor. Her affiliations with Circle in the Square, Circle Repertory Company, Goodspeed Opera House, Yale Repertory Theatre, and other companies are documented in the organization files. less

There is little personal correspondence and no personal papers or photographs. The rest of the collection includes contracts, legal/financial agreements and scripts. less

The Lillian Gish papers (75 lf.) span the years 1909-1992 and consist of correspondence including letters from friends, family, fans and business associates, personal papers, business, legal and financial documents, scripts, writings, photographs including early D.W. Griffith silent film photographs both candid shots taken during shooting and film stills, portraits by famous photographers, personal and family photographs, publicity and production photographs and snapshots, scrapbooks on the careers of both Dorothy and Lillian Gish, programs for early silent films and theatrical productions, clippings and ephemera that document the life and career of Lillian and Dorothy Gish from the early 1900's until Lillian's death in 1993. less

The collection consists primarily of correspondence (bulk late 1950s) concerning Row's writings, especially his book on Sarah Bernhardt; and the writings themselves, mostly theatrical reminiscences, in typescript and note form. As well as Bernhardt, Row wrote laudatory personal accounts of the Barrymores, John Gielgud, Richard Mansfield, Paul Muni, Cornelia Otis Skinner, Ellen Terry and Blanche Yurka, among others. The collection also contains some personal biographical material, publicity for Row's book, clippings of play reviews, and some material, mostly publicity, for The Afternoon Theatre under Row's direction. less

Also included are business papers, financial records, clippings, diaries, photographs and correspondence. There is little material reflecting the personal lives of Malina and Beck. less

The New York Shakespeare Festival records (1954-1992) measure approximately 850 linear feet and consist of scripts, correspondence, inter-office memoranda, production materials, reports, financial records, photographs, and memorabilia. The records reflect the origin and activities of the New York Shakespeare Festival, its general administration, and the staging of its productions, including their creation, management, booking, and promotion. The files of the Casting Office, except in the form of carbon copies in other series, are not included in this archive. There are also gaps in the files of the Associate Producer. Contracts were removed and require special permission of the curator to access. Oral history materials in Series I and some correspondence in Series V are restricted until the year 2043 in order to protect the privacy of individual persons. Series XIV (Oversized Materials) is not fully processed and is currently unavailable for research. less
