Herbert Mitgang (1920- ), author, editor, journalist, and motion-picture producer, was managing editor of the U.S. Army newspaper Stars and Stripes, during World War II. After his war service, he joined the New York Times as a copy editor and reviewer. He served as supervising editor of the Sunday Times drama section from 1955 to 1962, editorial writer and member of the editorial board from 1963 to 1964 and again from 1967 to 1976. From 1964 to 1967 he was assistant to the president and the executive editor of CBS News and produced several documentary films. He taught at City College in New York, was a visiting lecturer at Yale University and served as president of both the Authors' League and the Authors' Guild. Since 1976 Mitgang has been a cultural correspondent and book reviewer for the New York Times. In addition to his work at the Times and CBS, he has written articles, novels and biographies and has edited several books. Collection consists of correspondence, writings, files relating to publications, notes, clippings, photographs, motion pictures, recordings, videotapes, and memorabilia that document Mitgang's activities as a journalist, author, editor, and film producer. Papers include general correspondence, 1945-1979; New York Times editorial correspondence, 1970-1976; and correspondence concerning Authors' Guild, 1957-1979, Authors' League, 1962-1973, and Times Op-Ed page. Also, typescripts, notes, clippings, and other materials for his articles, reviews, biographies, novels, scripts, and other writings; and files, 1983-1988, collected by Mitgang for his book Dangerous Dossiers. Other items consist of photographs, notebooks, awards, teaching notes, clippings, Stars and Stripes scrapbook, cartoons, and memorabilia. Materials relating to his documentaries include scripts and notes, films, videotapes and audio recordings of programs produced for CBS News; these include documentaries on Carl Sandburg, Henry Moore, and Jimmy Walker, and interviews with David Ben-Gurion, Anthony Eden, Admiral Gene R. George Sands Bryan was an American author. Collection consists of correspondence, writings, photographs, and printed matter. Correspondence relates chiefly to the preparation of Bryan's book about Thomas Alva Edison. The Emanuel Hertz manuscripts on Abraham Lincoln include a typescript of his book, Abraham Lincoln, A New Portrait (Horace Liveright: New York, 1931), as well as photostat copies of original Lincoln letters used in preparation of the book. Chapters 28, 30-33, 35-37, and 39-42 of vol. 1 are missing The manuscripts also include a bound volume entitled "Essays on Lincoln." This contains a typewritten copy of "Herndon, Lincoln's Boswell. Jerome B. Howard (1860-1923) was associated with the Phonographic Institute in Cincinnati, Ohio. Collection consists of correspondence, writings, notes, shorthand notebooks, and photograph. Bulk of the collection is manuscripts in Benn Pitman shorthand of letters and writings concerning the trial of Mary Surratt for alleged complicity in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Collection consists of correspondence, writings, notes and transcripts, student notes and notebooks, diaries, scrapbooks, photographs, miscellaneous papers, and printed matter. General correspondence, 1862-1938, is between Ford and historians, librarians, scholars, writers, publishers, booksellers, and lawyers, including extensive correspondence with Charles Francis Adams, Henry Cabot Lodge, James Ford Rhodes, and John Franklin Jameson. Family correspondence, 1870-1935, is chiefly incoming letters from many members of Ford's family. Most of the writings are drafts or hand-written manuscripts for works which Ford authored or edited and are concerned with American history and economics. Notes and transcripts are comprised of numerous transcripts of historical letters and other documents with research notes, annotated printed matter, and notebooks (some from Ford's student days.) Diaries, 1873-1918, contain brief entries concerning Ford's activities, and scrapbooks, ca. 1898-1931, consist mostly of clippings and other materials on a particular subject. Photographs are of Ford family members and of various personal and public subjects. Miscellaneous papers include personal papers, writings by individuals other than Ford, records of organizations with which he was affiliated, genealogical documents and biographical sketches of the Fowler and Chauncey families, financial accounts, and ephemera. less

Cochran of Illinois and Vancouver, Washington, kept while serving with Illinois Volunteers during the Civil War, a few letters to him from Robert G. George Jones was the first publisher of the New York Times and Henry J. Raymond was a New York politician and the first editor of the New York Times. Together with Edward B. Wesley they founded the New-York Daily Times in 1851. The collection consists of correspondence and documents by and about George Jones, Henry J. Raymond, and the early history of the Times assembled by the New York Times' publishers and staff, as well as correspondence about the collection. Collected materials include correspondence between Henry J. Raymond and notable people of the time, legal documents, memorials to Raymond, a manuscript of "Extracts from the Journal of Henry J. Raymond," photographs of Jones and Raymond, and newspaper clippings. Administrative files include letters to and from Adolph S. Ochs, Arthur Hays Sulzberger, and others regarding the acquisition of letters and documents. Artifacts consist of a lace bag and a miniature portrait of Elizabeth M.
