This collection contains some of the drawings that were displayed on the walls of Sardi's restaurant from the first drawing of Alex Gard to Don Bevan drawings of the early 1950s. The caricatures are predominately, but not exclusively, from the field of performing arts. This includes music, cinema, theater and dance and ranges from performers to press agents and managers to writers. A few people from outside the performing arts field, such as Al Capone and Helen Keller, are also represented. The common factor among all the objects of the caricatures is that they all must have eaten at Sardi's. less

Joseph Holland (1910-1994) was an American actor who appeared on the Broadway stage during the mid 20th century. The Joseph Holland papers date from 1937 to 1989 (bulk dates: 1950-1957) and contain correspondence and a scrapbook with clippings, programs, and production photographs documenting Holland's career in the theatre. Most productions represented in the scrapbook date after 1950, including The Show Off (1950), Julius Caesar (1950), The Bad Seed (1954), and Small War on Murray Hill (1957). The scrapbook also contains a few congratulatory telegrams and greeting cards. One caricature by Neil Ferguson is present, from the 1937 production of Julius Caesar at the Mercury Theatre. All loose material from the scrapbook was rehoused in folders. less

Stage, screen and television actor, Roland Young (1887-1953), was born in London and performed in England and the United States. One of his most notable films was Topper (1937). Young became a U.S. citizen in 1918; he died at home in his sleep in New York City in 1953. Roland Young's scrapbook and originals consist primarily of his original drawings and artwork, personal and professional photographs, scripts and poetry (several written by Young himself), a few pieces of correspondence, contracts, financial papers, and some personal ephemera, all documenting Young's life and acting career. There are some photographs of caricatures by Jean Negulesco. Stage and film productions included in the photographs are the film, The Great Lover (1949) with Bob Hope, the stage production, Perfect Pitch (Montclair Theatre, New Jersey, 1948) with Buddy Ebsen; Actors Cary Grant and Henry Daniell are in 2 candid photographs. less

Caricaturist, cartoonist and illustrator, Alfred Frueh, was born in Lima, Ohio in 1880. In his early career, he worked at the St. Louis post-dispatch and the New York world. From 1908 to 1909, Frueh studied art in Europe. In 1925, Frueh joined the staff of the New Yorker magazine, which published his work until 1962. Frueh died in Sharon, Connecticut in 1968. Black and white original caricatures and color linocuts of theatrical productions and personalities. Many of the caricatures of theatrical productions appeared in the New Yorker magazine between 1925 and 1962. Productions depicted include: The children's hour by Lillian Hellman, 1934 and 1953; Porgy and Bess by George Gershwin, 1942 and 1953; Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, 1923 and 1935; Twentieth century by Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur (based on a play by Charles Bruce Milholland), 1933 and 1951; and the 1934 and 1936 editions of the Ziegfeld follies. Also included are 2 caricatures of the motion picture, City lights, 1931, with Charlie Chaplin, and 1 caricature of the Ziegfeld Theatre exterior, depicting the tower of the building as a woman's leg and foot, 1929. less

Comedian and author Joe Laurie Jr. (ca. 1894-1954) was born on the Lower East Side of New York City. He entered vaudeville in his teens, later performing in a number of shows on Broadway and across the U.S. Laurie and his first wife, Aleen Bronson, performed together in vaudeville until 1918; they had a son, Bryant. In 1922, Laurie married June Butcher and they lived in Forest Hills, New York. Laurie was a star of the radio version of Can you top this? He was the author of numerous vaudeville skits, screenplays, radio and television programs, plays, and syndicated columns, as well as the author of 2 books on vaudeville: Show biz, from vaude to video (with Abel Green) (Holt, 1951); Vaudeville: from the honkytonks to the Palace (Holt, 1953). After a long illness, Laurie died at St. Clare's Hospital, New York City at about age 61 (sources vary). Original caricatures and sketches, mostly black and white and mostly of Joe Laurie Jr. There are also cartoons, comic strips, etchings, reproductions, and paste ups of 2 syndicated newspaper features by Laurie, "Heads and Tales" and "Pen-Grins." The Friars Club and the Lambs Club are represented in several pieces. Artists include W.A. Carlson, Gregory d'Alessio, Jerry Doyle, George Fayko, Ving Fuller, Leo Garel, Frank Godwin, Rube Goldberg, Vic Guinness, Will B. Johnstone, Darrell McClure, George McManus, and Zito Vincenzo; most pieces are signed. less
