Gustav Blum (d. 1963) was an American theater director, producer, actor, and teacher. In 1916, he founded the East-West Players, a group that performed one-act plays, including English translations of Yiddish plays. The East-West Players won the Belasco Cup at the first Little Theater Tournament in 1923. Blum also produced and staged Broadway plays and worked as a drama teacher in high schools from 1909 until his retirement in 1958. The Gustav Blum papers (1912-1988, bulk 1915-1953) contain a scrapbook, contracts, scripts, photographs, clippings, correspondence, and other papers documenting Blum's career. The scrapbook dates from 1916 to 1923 and contains clippings and programs of the East-West Players. There are scripts for four plays that Blum produced: The Shame Woman (1923), Gertie (1926), My Son (1924), and Walk Hard (1946). The script for Walk Hard is a heavily annotated prompt copy; the other scripts have minimal or no annotation. There are also three scripts written or co-written by Blum: Against the Current, Eden, and A Sleepless Night. Contracts date from 1927 to 1946. The collection includes a statement of receipts and disbursements for Walk Hard and an estimated budget for Laughter in the Courtyard. Photographs consist of images of Blum, an unidentified production photograph, and signed photographs of Bertha Kalich and David Belasco. The collection also contains biographical information, clippings, and copyright records related to Blum's career, dating from 1912 to 1988. less

Harold Prince (b. 1928), is a producer and director of theater, film and opera, but is best known for his work on Broadway musicals. Prince, who is commonly known as Hal Prince, began his career in 1948 as an assistant in the office of Broadway director and producer George Abbott. During his early years with Abbott, he made valuable connections with Robert E. Griffith, who would later become his producing partner and Ruth Mitchell, who would be his longtime assistant and production supervisor. Griffith and Prince scored a huge success in their first producing project, The Pajama Game (1954) and had many subsequent Broadway hits until Griffith's death in 1961. Prince began directing with the play, A Family Affair (1962). He has gone on to have a notably prolific career, directing and/or producing many landmark Broadway musicals, including Cabaret (1966), West Side Story (1957), Fiddler on the Roof (1964), Follies (1972), Evita (1979) Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (1979) and The Phantom of the Opera (1987). Principal collaborators on musical theater productions include the songwriters Stephen Sondheim; Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick; John Kander and Fred Ebb; Larry Grossman; Betty Comden and Adolph Green; and Andrew Lloyd Webber. In addition to musicals and plays, Prince also has directed operas and two feature films, and appeared in many documentaries and tributes; in 1974 he published an autobiography, Contradictions: Notes on Twenty-Six Years in the Theatre. This collection consists of scores to Broadway musicals directed and produced by Harold Prince from the 1950s through the 1980s, arranged alphabetically by show title and by song title within each show. In the cases of Sweeney Todd and certain conductor scores for A Doll’s Life, as noted, where the complete score existed, it has been left in running order. The bulk of the collection consists of scores from A Doll’s Life, by Larry Grossman and Betty Comden and Adolph Green, including oversized conductor scores and full orchestra parts. The collection also covers, with near completeness the scores to Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s Evita, (1979) Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick’s She Loves Me (1963) and Stephen Sondheim’s A Little Night Music, (1973) Side by Side by Sondheim (1977) and Sweeney Todd (1979). The diaries of Judith Malina include personal reflections, a history of many aspects of The Living Theatre, and a view of the avant-garde cultural life of New York in the 1940's and 1950's. Malina documents her own struggles as a young woman and artist and also the struggle, together with Julian Beck, to create The Living Theatre. Among their contemporaries and collaborators were James Agee, John Cage, Joseph Campbell, Merce Cunningham, Dorothy Day, Richard Edelman, Paul Goodman, Lou Harrison, Alan Hovhaness, Lester Schwartz and Philip Smith. Malina discusses her work on various productions including: THE AGE OF ANXIETY, DR. FAUSTUS LIGHTS THE LIGHTS, THE IDIOT KING, PHEDRE, AND TONIGHT WE IMPROVISE. Personally, Malina discusses her relationships, her family, her views of the world of the 1950's and her commitment to pacifism. Her involvement as a pacifist, and her imprisonment with Dorothy Day and others, is described in some detail. The final years of the diary (Feb. 1956-June 1959) are incomplete. They relate to the search for and renovation of the 14th Street theater, which opened in 1959. These entries are written by several people who are not identified. less
