Charles Ellsworth Goodell (1926-1987), lawyer, was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from upstate New York, 1959-1968, and U.S. Senator, 1968-1971. Although at first he was a conservative Republican, he adopted increasingly liberal views on public policy. After being defeated in his bid to return to the Senate because of his opposition to the Vietnam War, he practiced law in Washington, D.C. and served as chairman of the Presidential Clemency Board which reviewed applications for clemency by Vietnam War resisters. Collection consists of papers documenting Goodell's public career as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from the 43rd and 38th Congressional Districts in New York State and as U.S. Senator from New York, records of his chairmanship of the Presidential Clemency Board, personal papers, photographs, and audio-video materials. Congressional papers include general correspondence; case and committee files; congressional district files; bills and resolutions; files relating to politics, publicity and Goodell's public activities; and files of his legislative and administrative assistants. Photographs and audio-video materials, including recordings of oral history interviews, reflect Goodell's public career. Personal papers consist of correspondence and materials related to the publication of his book Political Prisoners in America (1973), general and family correspondence, and press clippings. Records, 1974-1975, of the Presidential Clemency Board contain administrative memoranda concerning the formation and operation of the Board, memoranda to and from President Gerald Ford, case summaries, status reports, and printed matter. less

Rose Pesotta (1896-1965) was a labor union official. Collection consists of correspondence and papers reflecting Pesotta's career as official of the International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union and as organizer of garment workers in various cities in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. Includes diaries, 1934-1949; family letters; photographs; and writings, including drafts of her autobiographies, Bread Upon the Waters (1944) and Days of Our Lives (1958). Also, notes, personal accounts, pamphlets, news clippings, posters, and periodicals relating to the labor movement, Spanish Civil War, the Histadrut (Israeli labor organization), and topics such as anarchism, the labor movement, racism, and the plight of displaced persons after World War II. less

Elijah Shoemaker was the local chairman of the Sante Fe System Local of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters and assistant district chairman (Los Angeles). These papers contain original and mimeographed correspondence to and from the national headquarters of the Brotherhood of the Sleeping Car Porters including a letter from L. B. Thompson, legislative representative, and W.T. Nickleberry, past president relating to a memorial service for A. Philip Randolph; financial statements; reports of convention proceedings; and miscellaneous handbooks on health benefits, payroll deductions, workers compensation and copies of the General Rules for the Guidance of Employees of the Atchison, Topeka and Sante Fe Railway System (1950-1966). less

The Blacks in the Railroad Industry Collection is comprised of a variety of materials documenting the struggle of black railroad employees against ouster from the industry by collusive actions of the companies and the unions. While provenance seems to be uncertain, holograph notes on many of the documents appear to have been done by Robert Wood, editor of "The Railroad Workers' Link," a newspaper published by the Railroad Committee of the Communist Party.
