Collection consists of correspondence, writings, legal and military records, political and personal papers, memorabilia, and printed matter relating to Griffin's military and political career. Correspondence, 1885-1935, is largely related to his political activities; the remainder pertains to his legislative concerns, immigration matters for his constituents, as well as some personal correspondence. Richmond Barnes Williams (1903-1986) was an American business executive and world traveler. He worked in the Long Lines Dept. of the American Telephone and Telegraph Company from 1926 until his retirement in 1968. He traveled extensively in the U.S., Canada and abroad. Travel journals of Williams are in the form of original typescript copies arranged in chronological order and they record every aspect of his travels from their inception and planning to the return home. Journals of trips abroad begin with his trip, 1925-1926, to Great Britain and the Continent. Succeeding trips took him to most of the countries of Europe, North Africa, the Near East, Central Asia, and the Far East. His travels in North America were mainly in the period of 1930s to 1950s. less

Saul Kussiel Padover (1905-1981), historian and teacher, was born in Austria but came to the U.S. in 1920. He was a prolific author including among his subjects Thomas Jefferson and Karl Marx. From 1938 to 1943 he served as Assistant Secretary of the Interior and did intelligence work in Europe during World War II. Later he taught American political history at the New School in New York City. Collection consists of materials generated in Germany from October 1944 through May 1945 by Padover and two colleagues, Lewis Gittler and Paul Sweet. They were members of the OSS (Office of Strategic Services) attached to the U.S. Army. Papers contain copies of psychological and political profiles based on interviews with Nazi party members, workers, industrialists, radicals, government officials, former prisoners in concentration camps, children, and others. Also included are analyses of conditions in the liberated areas, daily summaries of intelligence and political reports, personal journals kept by Padover with reflections on conditions in Germany in the final days of World War II and on-the-spot descriptions of death camps, a few photographs, typescripts of articles by Padover and Gittler, newsclippings from American newspapers, and some memorabilia. less

Volume 4, Marvyn Scudder scrapbook, is a journal and scrapbook with entries by members of several generations of the family of Moses L. Scudder (1843-1917), railroad president and financier of Halesite, Huntington, recording family matters and social activities, with particular reference to the upbringing of Marvyn and Philip Johnston ("Jack") Scudder. Dr. Lyons of West Haverford, PA, and other personal and business matters. Family correspondence of 1907 contains preliminary discussions with sculptor Frank Edwin Elwell regarding the commission of a sculpture honoring one of the family's revolutionary war ancestors. Also present is an 1898 diary of Rosa's aunt Elizabeth Montgomery Sharpe and a letter she received from Jane Addams in 1895. Stevens family correspondence, 1898-1951, is chiefly addressed to Rosa Stevens or "Cousin Mary." Of note are copies of three letter of Charles J. Jessie Lloyd O'Connor was a journalist and pro-labor activist from the 1920s until her death in 1988. She predominantly wrote for the Federated Press, a news service oriented toward labor and unions. O'Connor's articles were published in a variety of national newspapers, and she spent the years 1927-28, and 1933 in the Soviet Union writing for the London Daily Herald and the Moscow Daily Times. She was involved with numerous progressive organizations, including the ACLU, the American League Against War and Fascism, and the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom. Daughter of the pacifist Lola Maverick Lloyd and Chicago millionaire William Bross Lloyd, Jessie Lloyd O'Connor professionally collaborated with the radical journalist Harvey O'Connor, her husband of fifty-seven years. less

James W. Gerard (1794-1874) was a prominent lawyer born in New York City. After graduating from Columbia, Gerard joined the New York Bar Association and became a prominent member of the city's legal community. He is notable for his work in creating the House of Refuge for the Reformation of Juvenile Delinquents in 1823, which was the first institution of its kind in the United States. Later, he became the Inspector of Common Schools The collection consists of one scrapbook containing personal correspondence; a journal from an 1863 trip to Europe; writings and speeches by James W. Gerard (senior) on crime and juvenile delinquency; obituaries and tributes on the death of Gerard in 1874. Jane Cowl (1884-1950) was an actress, playwright and theatrical producer. She appeared in her most famous acting roles in the 1920s and 1930s and co-authored several plays during this period with Jane Murfin. During World War II she was co-director of the Stage Door Canteen, an entertainment center for U.S. servicemen and women in New York City. She also hosted a radio program in the 1940s. Collection consists of correspondence, financial papers, diary, and biographical materials collected by Cowl. Correspondence, 1923-1948, is with noted playwrights, directors, actors, and theater managers; other correspondence, 1943-1946, concerns her charitable work with disabled veterans and underprivileged children. Also, diary written during Cowl's first trip to Europe in 1907 in which she described the European stage; materials she collected for a planned autobiography; and personal financial accounts. less
