Bell was a founder of the Gay Activists Alliance and wrote for many gay and mainstream presses, including the popular column "Bell Tells" in the Village Voice. The American Place Theatre Company records document almost five decades of theatrical work produced by the American Place Theatre and the administrative activities of the theater. The bulk of the collection consists of production files that span from 1963 until the 2008-2009 season. The records also contain administrative files that represent the day-to-day operations of the American Place Theatre, minutes of the board of trustees, extensive correspondence of Director Wynn Handman, scripts, and posters. less

This collection also contains papers that illustrate the practical business of running a theater company such as literary office reports, meeting minutes, and guidelines, as well as a significant amount of production related material including casting information, production reports, programs, and general publicity. less

The New York Shakespeare Festival records (1954-1992) measure approximately 850 linear feet and consist of scripts, correspondence, inter-office memoranda, production materials, reports, financial records, photographs, and memorabilia. The records reflect the origin and activities of the New York Shakespeare Festival, its general administration, and the staging of its productions, including their creation, management, booking, and promotion. The files of the Casting Office, except in the form of carbon copies in other series, are not included in this archive. There are also gaps in the files of the Associate Producer. Contracts were removed and require special permission of the curator to access. Oral history materials in Series I and some correspondence in Series V are restricted until the year 2043 in order to protect the privacy of individual persons. Series XIV (Oversized Materials) is not fully processed and is currently unavailable for research. less
