Helen Armstead-Johnson (1920-2006) was an English professor and the founder/director of the Armstead-Johnson Foundation for Theater Research, whose purpose was to collect, preserve, document and exhibit African-American contributions to the American stage. The Helen Armstead-Johnson papers reflect some aspects of the personal life and professional career of this African American theater historian and educator. less

Gertrude Elise (née Johnson) McDougal Ayer, was born in New York City, and attended City College, Hunter College, and Columbia University. She began teaching in New York City public elementary schools in 1905, and she was the first vocational guidance instructor in an elementary school. In 1924 and 1936, Ayer was appointed assistant principal and principal, respectively. For twenty-five years, she was the only Black person to hold the position of principal within the New York City public school system. The collection consists of biographical information; a family history written by Mrs. Ayer, possibly for her daughter, Elizabeth; and a few items related to her professional activities before and after retirement in 1954. Additionally, there are scrapbooks, 1931-1966, which focus on Ayer's appointment and career as an assistant principal and principal, and include columns from the New York Amsterdam News. less

Collection consists of a few of William Spiller's personal papers, programs, and news clippings of William and Isabele Spiller's European and American tours, 1912-1942, and of the Spiller School of Music. Bulk of papers contain material pertaining to Isabelle Spiller's work as a music supervisor and orchestra conductor in New York City public schools. Of particular interest is her work as head of the Federal Music Project in New York. Also, a scrapbook containing her published articles. less

This collection consists mainly of documents from professional organizations of which Young was a member or officer, such as the National Association of College Women, the Odd Fellowship Lodge no. 2063, the National Achievement Club, and the Association of Negro Business and Professional Women. These documents include correspondence, newspaper clippings, reports, and membership information. less

Muriel Fortune Bush, the daughter of Walter Fortune (her mother died in childbirth), was born on July 28, 1905, in Long Island, New York. Fortune attended a boarding school outside of Baltimore, and later graduated from Miner Teacher's College in Washington, D.C. In 1935, Fortune married Paul Bush from Louisiana. They had no children, however they adopted a racially mixed child, June Cross. During the Second World War, Paul was stationed overseas with the United States Army. The couple moved to Atlantic City, New Jersey from Washington, D.C. early in the marriage when Mrs. Bush accepted a position to teach at the Indiana Avenue School in the Atlantic City school district. She worked in the school district for 47 years. Though not documented in the collection, Muriel Bush was an amateur photographer. "Aunt Peggy", as she was affectionately called by her family, took pictures of Atlantic City's Black community, especially children. One of her photos was featured in Deborah Willis's book, Reflections in Black: A History of Black Photos, 1840–Present. Two main subject areas for her photography were grade school classes at the Indiana Avenue School and weddings in the community. The Bush Family letters consist of a small body of correspondence among members of the Bush extended family and friends. Included are letters from adopted daughter June Cross, other relatives, and Private Leonard Burwell to Paul, June 24, 1944; vacation postcards; and condolence letters to Muriel Bush following the death of her husband. less

Isabel Washington Powell (1908-2007) was an actress, teacher, and the first wife of Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. The Isabel Washington Powell collection contains news clippings relating to Powell's appearance in the plays Bamboola (1929), Harlem (1929), and Singin' the Blues. Additional clippings refer to her engagement and marriage to Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. There are also several letters deal with her work as a public school teacher, speaker, and Jimmy Carter supporter. less

The Modern School was a private elementary school founded by Mildred Johnson (1914-2007) that operated from 1934 to 2007. The school, located in Harlem, offered Black students an independent, progressive education. The collection includes the records of both the Modern School and Camp Dunroven, as well as the personal papers of Mildred Johnson. less
