Bernard F. Ashe (1936-2023) was an African American labor lawyer who served as General Counsel to New York State United Teachers (NYSUT), a federation of labor unions, for twenty-five years. Ashe's papers, dating from the 1910s to 2008 (bulk dates 1959 to 2008), chronicle his entire career at NYSUT, earlier positions at the National Labor Relations Board and United Auto Workers, and his membership in legal organizations, including the American Bar Association. The collection contains letters and legal memorandums prepared by Ashe, correspondence, case briefs and reports, deposition transcripts, agendas, meeting minutes, clippings, newsletters, datebooks, and personal files. less

Richard Saunders (1922-1987) was a Black photojournalist who primarily covered Black communities in the United States and later Africa and the Middle East. Most of the collection is from Saunders' time as a lead photographer for the United States Information Agency, where he photographed and interviewed for Topic, a magazine distributed in Africa. The papers hold tearsheets from the magazine, captions, notes, and transcripts from interviews. less
