The National Board of Review of Motion Pictures (U.S.) was created in 1909 as the New York Board of Censorship of Motion Pictures to make recommendations to the Mayor's office concerning controversial films. The Board changed its name in 1916 and shifted its focus from censorship to publishing reviews and awarding achievements in film.
