Norman Matoon Thomas (1884-1968), the American Socialist leader, started his career as a Presbyterian minister in New York City. He became active in the peace movement during World War I and founded the National Civil Liberties Bureau (renamed American Civil Liberties Union in 1920) with Roger Baldwin. Thomas became an active member of the Socialist Party of America, was co-director of the League for Industrial Democracy, and edited the socialist magazine, The World Tomorrow. He ran unsuccessfully for the presidency of the U.S. six times on the Socialist ticket and was active in the civil rights, universal disarmament and anti-war movements throughout his life. Collection consists of correspondence, diaries, speeches, writings, newspaper columns, press releases, and other papers relating to Thomas' career in national politics, his leadership of the Socialist Party and of the labor movement, and his association with various organizations. General correspondence, 1905-1967, accounts for the bulk of the collection and provides, particularly after 1932, an almost daily record of his activities and concerns. These papers document his relationship with leading politicians, government officials, trade union leaders, and major intellectual and political figures of his time. Organizational files, 1904-1967, consist of documents relating to the numerous organizations with which Thomas was involved. Speeches, 1911-1967, include drafts and final copies of his speeches, statements, interviews, publicity materials and many of his speaking schedules. Writings, 1917-1967, contain published and unpublished essays, books, newspaper columns, journals, diaries and unpublished autobiography. Subject files, 1905-1967, consist of reports, essays, clippings, and other printed matter concerning foreign and domestic affairs, civil liberties and discrimination, and war and peace. Also includes records and memorabilia, 1936-1964, from testimonial celebrations held in his honor; financial papers, 1933-1967, family papers, 1915-1969; biographical and publicity materials, 1903-1964; and photographs, ca. 1900-1966. less

George Marshall was a leading advocate for the abolition of the Un-American Activities Committee of the United States House of Representatives, a noted conservationist, and a pioneer in the U.S. civil rights movement. The George Marshall collection documents Marshall's involvement in the 1940s with civil rights issues, his legal defense against a contempt citation from the House Un-American Activities Committee, and his management of the Robert Marshall Foundation's grant-making program. less

The Bureau of Social Science Research (BSSR), which existed from 1950-1986, was a non-profit research agency created to conduct research in basic and applied social science. Albert E. Gollin (1930-l999), a media sociologist, was a research associate of the BSSR. The Bureau of Social Science research files are comprised of materials from the two sociological studies for which Albert Gollin was the principal investigator, the March on Washington (l963) and the Poor People's Campaign (l968). less

Benjamin F. McLaurin (1906-1989) was a Black labor leader and civic worker who held leadership positions within the Brotherhood of the Sleeping Car Porters (BSCP) during the 1920s and 1930s. He worked with A. Philip Randolph throughout the Civil Rights Movement, and later advocated for job equality and increased educational opportunities for minority communities while serving on New York City board committees. The collection, dated 1936 to 1989, showcases McLaurin's lifelong labor, civic, and political work through correspondence, project reports, meeting minutes, Senate committee statements and testimonies, convention and conference reports, and newspaper clippings. less

Bill Strickland is a scholar, activist, and professor emeritus of the Department of Afro-American Studies at University of Massachusetts (UMass) Amherst. A native of Boston, Strickland graduated from Boston Latin School and Harvard University. After serving in the Marine Corps, he became active in civil rights and Black liberation work, serving as Executive Director of the Northern Student Movement; working in Mississippi for the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party; and serving as the Northern Coordinator of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party's Congressional Challenge. He was a founding member of Malcolm X's Organization of Afro-American Unity in 1964, and in 1969, he also was a founding member of the Institute of the Black World in Atlanta. Strickland was a key member of the faculty in Afro-American Studies at UMass Amherst, teaching history and politics, and serving as Director of the W. E. B. Du Bois Papers. Strickland consulted on various documentaries including Eyes on the Prize (1987), about the civil rights movement; Malcolm X: Make It Plain (1994), for which he also wrote the companion book, also published in 1994; and W. E. B. Du Bois: A Biography in Four Voices (1996). He retired in 2013. This collection consists of the research files of William Strickland on various topics. These topics include the documentary Eyes on the Prize, for which Strickland served as a consultant, and Jesse Jackson and the Rainbow/Push Coalition (now the National Rainbow Coalition); Strickland worked on Jackson's presidential campaign in 1988. Other topics include the Black Panther Party, Black Radical Congress, Arna Bontemps, H. Rap Brown, Stokely Carmichael (Kwame Ture), Benjamin Chavis and the NAACP, civil rights leaders and movements, Katherine Dunham, Maulana Karanga, racism, and Roots (television program). Most of the files include notes and some writing by Strickland, but the majority of the files consist of printed matter (clippings, articles, mailings, conference materials), correspondence, and writing by some of the previously mentioned individuals. Additionally, there is one folder of correspondence to and from Strickland, mostly unrelated to the research files. less
