The Joan Jett Blakk/Lick Bush in '92 Archive, ca. 1991-1996, documents Terence Smith's drag persona Joan Jett Blakk as she campaigns in the 1991 Chicago mayoral election and the 1992 presidential election. The collection consists of news articles, academic essays, campaign speeches, promotional material, and ephemera related to Blakk's political campaigns, as well as clippings, reviews, and promotional material for the documentaries Drag in for Votes and Lick Bush in '92 by Gabriel Gomez and Elspeth kydd. There is also a miscellaneous folder for events attended by Blakk and a file for the playscript and programs of Womandingo, a play which featured Blakk. less

The Vicki Garvin papers document aspects of Garvin's work as a trade union organizer, especially among African-Americans in the 1950s; her teaching experience in Shanghai (1964-1970); and her support of communism both in the United States and China. less

Personal and professional papers, writings, office files and printed matter documenting Preston Wilcox's dual career as an educator and community organizer. Included are biographical and autobiographical narratives; some correspondence and organization files; an extensive writings series; proposals, minutes, reports and other documents dating from 1958 to 1965 pertaining to the East Harlem Project, the East Harlem Summer Festival, and the Massive Economic Neighborhood Development (MEND); confidential files from the 1964 Princeton Summer Studies Program, the pilot project for the pre-college Upward Bound program; compilations of material on public schools, decentralization and community control; and Afram's surviving records. Some of the main themes explored in the writings are: decentralization and parental decision-making, community organization and economic development, Black Power versus integration, social policy and white racism, empowering the poor, and black studies and black schools. The Afram files comprise the following subseries: Administrative, Publications, Parent Participation in Follow Through, Malcolm X Lovers Network and Vertical Files. The latter two categories are compilations of articles and other printed matter, with editorial notes by Wilcox, on Malcolm X, and on selected topics and personalities, including education, community control, reparations, Harlem, Marcus Garvey, Martin Luther King, Jr., Kwame Toure (Stokely Carmichael) and Leonard Jeffries. less

Mordecai Philip Montgomery was a long-time member of the Socialist Party of New York. Montgomery, born in 1880 in Fayette, Alabama, worked as a Pullman porter, then for the Works Progress Administration, and in his later years, as a messenger in the Wall Street area of Manhattan. He died in 1956 in New York City. The Mordecai P. Montgomery Collection consists principally of an unpublished manuscript, "Shining in Death", authored by Montgomery, about a Canadian Black man and his struggle to become an actor in New York; the time period is from the second half of the nineteenth century until the Depression. The collection also includes a folder of letters and a reminiscence by Edward P. Gottlieb, the donor, regarding Montgomery. The letters are from Gottlieb to a publisher/editor and to author Toni Morrison, seeking to get the manuscript read and published following Montgomery's death. less

The Marilyn Clement papers, 1967-2005, consist primarily of printed material, which document her activities as an activist with the organizations where she was either employed or worked as a volunteer. less

Lee A. Nelson was the president of both The Colored Voters Club and The Colored Democratic League of Somerset County, New Jersey. During the 1930s, Nelson was very active on behalf of the Democratic Party with the hope of being appointed to a position in the Federal Service. He also campaigned on behalf of fellow Democrats including Franklin Roosevelt and John N. Garner. Through the help of people like James A. Farley, Chairman of the Democratic State Committee, Percy H. Stewart, and others in charge of the campaign in Somerset County, New Jersey, Nelson was able to gain Roosevelt and Garner a lot of votes from the African American community. The Lee A. Nelson letters contain 35 letters ranging from 1932-1936, written to Nelson primarily from James A. Farley, John N. Garner, and Percy H. Stewart. The bulk of the letters are acknowledgments and thank you letters for the work Nelson did to ensure that Franklin Roosevelt won the 1933 Presidential election. Of note are the letters discussing the Democratic party gatherings held in 1932. Content includes advice on how to save money and attend events during the Great Depression. Another discusses Nelson's responsibility in filling a quota for a gathering by convincing others to vote for the Democratic Party. There are also invitations to various meetings, such as one that occurred on November 2nd, 1932, at the St. Peter's Hall in Somerville, New Jersey, and one for a mass meeting that occurred on October 26 at the Brook Theater in Bound Brook, New Jersey. less

The National Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression (NAARPR), founded in 1973 and still in existence today, seeks to raise awareness of America's political prisoners and prison conditions, police brutality, repressive legislation, and unfair labor practices. While most of the materials concern Black Americans, other minority groups, such as Native American activists, Puerto Rican nationalists, Chicanos, and the LGBTQ community do have a presence in this collection, as do cases involving oppression based on leftist political beliefs. The collection includes extensive correspondence with prisoners, as well as materials specifically related to executive board member Angela Davis, and materials dedicated to the NAARPR's management, conferences, and rallies, mostly from the 1970s through the 1980s. less
