Julia M. Wass Carpenter of Boston was the grandmother of Lilias Hazewell MacLane Seligmann. The papers consist of Carpenter's diaries of travel through the west and Mexico, and commonplace book of limericks with accompanying sketches. The diaries give a vivid portrait of Carpenter's travels through Missouri, California and Mexico during the latter part of the 19th century by railroad, boat and carriage. Sites visted include Los Angeles, San Francisco and Oakland, California. The remainder of the papers consists of miscellaneous letters to or from family members Albert Carpenter, Alan MacLane, Fanny Friend MacLane and J. Hendrix MacLane.
