Artist and gay rights activist Copy Berg was born Vernon E. Berg, III on July 10, 1951. He attended the United States Naval Academy from 1970-1974 and then served with the U. S. Navy Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean. In 1975 the Navy sought to release him by General Discharge on grounds of homosexuality. Berg fought a highly publicized legal battle against the Navy but lost the case and was released in 1976. He settled in New York where he studied at Pratt Institute and launched his career as an artist. In 1986 Berg was diagnosed with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the cause of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). His subsequent artwork explored the social response to the AIDS epidemic, sexual politics and sadomasochism. Berg died of an AIDS-related illness on January 27, 1999. The Copy Berg Papers include correspondence of the artist, his friends and his family; records of Berg's service in the United States Navy and his discharge dispute; artwork; photographs; audio and video recordings; printed material and ephemera. less

Seabury Cone Mastick (1871-1969) was a New York state legislator. Collection consists of correspondence, scrapbooks and family papers of Mastick. General correspondence concerns New York state politics, especially Mastick's work as chairman of the New York State Commission on Old Age Security and the New York State Commission for the Revision of the Tax Laws. Family papers include memorabilia and scrapbooks of press clippings, programs, invitations, and other items relating to Mastick's political career, his service as a naval officer during World War I, and his work with the United Service Organizations and the Army and Navy Department Committee of the National Council of Young Men's Christian Associations during World War II. Correspondents include Herbert H. Lehman and Franklin D. Roosevelt. less

Correspondents include Ballard's friends, family, classmates, and colleagues. Also included is correspondence (1944-1945) from Lockett Ford Ballard, Sr. to his sister, Margaret, and to his mother while he was convalescing from wounds received while serving with the U.S. 3rd Army in France. Professional papers relate to his graduate school work, and to his work at the Litchfield Historical Society and the Old State Capitol Restoration Project. Captain Percival Drayton (1812-1865) of Charleston, South Carolina and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania was a distinguished U.S. Navy officer who served in the Union Navy during the Civil War. The Percival Drayton family papers, 1827-1967, chiefly document Percival Drayton's naval career, particularly during the Civil War. Drayton's papers, 1827-1865, comprise correspondence, naval orders and reports, a diary, financial papers, and certificates. The remainder, 1845-1967, consists of papers created or received by other Drayton family members and relatives, as well as ephemera, photographs, and printed material, mostly pertaining to Percival Drayton. Also included are letters written by an unidentified relative, a naval notebook, and later family correspondence regarding Drayton's naval service, as well as two manifest books for shipments of tobacco in the Maryland-District of Columbia area, 1803-1817, their connection to the Drayton family being unclear. less
