George Jones (1811-1891) was the first publisher of the New York Times. He founded the New-York Daily Times in 1851 with Henry J. Raymond and Edward B. Wesley. After Raymond's death in 1869, Jones took over the editorship of the paper. The collection, dating 1866-1891 and 1930, comprises letters written to George Jones, publisher and editor of the New York Times, 1871-1888, chiefly by prominent persons regarding U.S. politics, as well as some family letters, invitations, and unsorted items, 1866-1891 and 1930. Letters refer to New York Times editorial positions, Ulysses S. Grant's presidency and his bid for a third term in 1880, efforts to establish a retirement fund for Grant, and other matters reflecting Jones's influence in national and Republican Party affairs. Notable correspondents include James G. Blaine, Andrew Carnegie, George W. Childs, Jay Gould, Ulysses S. Grant, General Nelson A. Miles, Edwin B. Morgan, Daniel E. Sickles, Oscar S. Straus, Elihu B. Washburne, and Fernando Wood. The collection also includes letters from New York Times staff and the paper's foreign correspondents, and requests for employment with the Times. less

George Plimpton was a journalist, author, and editor who is best known as the founding editor-in-chief of the Paris Review, and for his participatory sports writing. Plimpton's papers date from 1902 to 2008, and document his literary career, forays into film and television, public appearances, and his personal history. The collection contains manuscripts, notes, and research from most of Plimpton's published works, as well as correspondence, photographs, and biographical files from throughout his life. less

Lillian Ross (1918-2017) was a journalist, and William Shawn (1907-1992) was an editor, both long associated with The New Yorker. Beginning in 1950 the two began a relationship that would last until Shawn's death. Joseph Cyrillus Walsh (1870-1955) was an American editor and journalist who was actively involved in Irish affairs. He was born in Ontario, Canada, where he became managing editor of the Montreal Herald. He went to New York City at the beginning of World War I as editor of Ireland, a weekly newspaper supporting self-government in Ireland. He attended the Paris Peace Conference in 1919 as a member of the press corps. In 1921 he served as director of organization of the American Association for the Recognition of the Irish Republic. Collection consists of letters received by Walsh and miscellaneous papers related to Walsh's involvement in Irish affairs. Letters, 1913-1947, concern Irish-American and Irish-Canadian matters, the publication of the weekly Ireland, and Walsh's directorship of the American Association for the Recognition of the Irish Republic. Miscellaneous papers include Walsh's reminiscence of the Irish revolutionary movement, genealogical papers of the O'Dunne and Walsh families, and memorabilia from the 1919 Paris Peace Conference. less
