J. Warren Brown of Maine and New York City was a mining broker and mining company executive. He was notably affiliated with Colorado silver mining companies such as the Consolidated Republican Mt. Mining Company, the Dunderberg Mining Company, and the Cascade Mining Company. The J. Warren Brown papers, 1855-1906, consist of miscellaneous letters, documents and printed matter relating to his mining interests. Letters and documents, 1855-1906, include brief correspondence, legal documents, memoranda, invoices, and receipts. A few items pertain to personal finances or other business matters. William H. Vanderbilt (1821-1885) was a wealthy American businessman who expanded the railroad system created by his father Cornelius Vanderbilt (1794-1887). The New York Central and Hudson River Railroad Company was formed in 1869 with the merger of two Vanderbilt-controlled companies, the New York Central Railroad Company and the Hudson River Railroad Company. The manuscript (1 volume, 360 pages, partially blank, with tipped-in index and maps) is a comprehensive abstract of title of properties acquired by William H. Vanderbilt and the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad Company during the years 1878 to 1880, on the upper west side of Manhattan. The area encompassed 65th to 72nd Streets, between Eleventh (West End) Avenue and the westerly line of the City of New York in the Hudson River. The abstract addresses the City's title to soil under the Hudson River, associated with titles to adjacent upland properties originating in the Somarindyke, Harsen, and Boggs estates. Supporting records include abstracted colonial charters, deeds and other conveyances, wills, and court proceedings, as well as cadastral survey maps and street diagrams. The manuscript, written in a clerical hand, was probably prepared by a New York City law firm. less

George Jones (1811-1891) was the first publisher of the New York Times. He founded the New-York Daily Times in 1851 with Henry J. Raymond and Edward B. Wesley. After Raymond's death in 1869, Jones took over the editorship of the paper. The collection, dating 1866-1891 and 1930, comprises letters written to George Jones, publisher and editor of the New York Times, 1871-1888, chiefly by prominent persons regarding U.S. politics, as well as some family letters, invitations, and unsorted items, 1866-1891 and 1930. Letters refer to New York Times editorial positions, Ulysses S. Grant's presidency and his bid for a third term in 1880, efforts to establish a retirement fund for Grant, and other matters reflecting Jones's influence in national and Republican Party affairs. Notable correspondents include James G. Blaine, Andrew Carnegie, George W. Childs, Jay Gould, Ulysses S. Grant, General Nelson A. Miles, Edwin B. Morgan, Daniel E. Sickles, Oscar S. Straus, Elihu B. Washburne, and Fernando Wood. The collection also includes letters from New York Times staff and the paper's foreign correspondents, and requests for employment with the Times. less
