Elnathan Hawkins (1793 or 1794-1858) was an American merchant mariner and ship captain, sailing the New York-Havre packet line in the latter part of his career. He was born in 1793 or 1794 to Eleazer Hawkins (1765-1796) and Mary Satterly (1763-1800) of Setauket, Long Island. He married Eliza Ferris and lived in the town of Westchester in Westchester County, New York (now in Bronx County). The collection of Elnathan Hawkins letters, 1814-1828, written from ports in the United States, Europe, and Belize, are addressed to his cousin John M. Williamson and uncle Jedidiah Williamson in Suffolk County, New York. Many are dated at New York City or New Orleans, and chiefly concern news of his sailings and his health, and instructions to the Williamsons regarding his finances. The ship Calpe and later the ship Marmion are mentioned as being under his command. A letter from Jonas Smith to Jedidiah Williamson, 1820, concerns a financial transaction for Hawkins.
