The Blacks in the Railroad Industry Collection is comprised of a variety of materials documenting the struggle of black railroad employees against ouster from the industry by collusive actions of the companies and the unions. While provenance seems to be uncertain, holograph notes on many of the documents appear to have been done by Robert Wood, editor of "The Railroad Workers' Link," a newspaper published by the Railroad Committee of the Communist Party. The Lincoln Lynch collection consists of personal and professional material. Personal papers, though limited, include a letter from his wife revealing the pressure of Lynch's position on their marriage; certificates; and a resume. The Professional papers, which make up the bulk of the collection, contain materials from his various positions, beginning with his employment at the British Overseas Airways Corp. and ending with his position at ECHO (Executive Council Housing Organizing). The majority of the professional series, however, is comprised of material related to Lynch's involvement with the Lakeview community's civil rights groups and his work at LI CORE. The Lakeview community files contain correspondence, including a lot of hate mail, some personally addressed to Lynch; flyers for meetings and demonstrations; calls to action; newsletters; and printed matter (mostly news clippings). The papers pertaining to CORE include by-laws; correspondence, statements, meeting agendas and minutes, reports, membership lists, newsletters, and printed matter (again, mostly news clippings). Some of the correspodence is from CORE members, seeking the organization's aid in their struggle against discrimination, and students, expressing interest in CORE's activities. Additionally, there are invitations for Lynch to speak, which include his speeches and notes. Much of the correspondence, however, is not from or to Lynch but from or to the national headquarters of CORE and its director, Floyd McKissick. Notable correspondents include Roy Wilkins, Adam Clayton Powell, A. Philip Randolph, Roy Innis, and Eugene T. Reed. The LI Core materials also consist of materials relating to conferences; collaborations with other community organizations such as the Rockville Center, Hempstead Economic Council, and Nassau County Legal Services; printed matter from other civil rights organizations, such as the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC); and published and unpublished writing by others about various civil rights issues. The rest of the Professional series contains limited information, mostly correspondence, about Lynch's positions after CORE; writing samples (most of which are fragments); and printed matter about Lynch (mostly news clippings). The final series, Subject files, contains printed matter (mostly news clippings) pertaining to the Civil Rights Movement, Black Power, school and housing integration, and the war in Vietnam, among others. less

Born in Santurce, Puerto Rico in 1909, and raised and educated in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, Conrad Clark matriculated at Howard and Columbia Universities from 1937-1939 and 1953-1954 respectively. He began his journalistic career in 1935, when he worked as a newspaper correspondent in Cuba. From 1936 to 1945, he was employed by the U.S. Government in the Department of the Interior, the U.S. Tariff Commission, and the War Department. In 1942, he enlisted in the Army. After his discharge, Clark went to work for the Afro-American Newspaper Co. in Washington D.C. (1946) and in 1948, he returned to work for the government in the Department of the Army. One year later, he was hired by the Philadelphia Tribune as a journalist. In 1954, Clark was employed by the Associate Negro Press and wrote for the Amsterdam News. He also reenlisted in 1954, and was stationed at various army bases in the U.S. and Europe. In the early 1960s, Clark was employed by the U.S. Information Agency as an Information Specialist and assigned to Korea. On his return to the United States, he was stationed at Fort Monmouth, N.J. in 1962, where he wrote for the Monmouth Message. He worked for other newspapers during the 1960s, including the Amsterdam News, the Philadelphia Tribune, and the Afro American. Clark also was affiliated with religious, fraternal, and professional organizations, such as the Elks and the Washington Press Club. The Conrad Clark papers consist of personal and professional correspondence and printed matter; the materials are related to Clark's employment by the United States Information Agency as an information specialist, and his employment as a journalist with the Amsterdam News and the Philadelphia Tribune. Isabel Washington Powell (1908-2007) was an actress, teacher, and the first wife of Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. The Isabel Washington Powell collection contains news clippings relating to Powell's appearance in the plays Bamboola (1929), Harlem (1929), and Singin' the Blues. Additional clippings refer to her engagement and marriage to Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. There are also several letters deal with her work as a public school teacher, speaker, and Jimmy Carter supporter. less

The Abyssinian Baptist Church Oral History Project consists of transcripts of interviews with ten African-American women—all Abyssinian members—about their recollections of Abyssinian Baptist Church as well as their Southern roots, their spiritual experiences and their political and Christian education. All of the women interviewed were more than seventy years old, and one was over ninety, at the time the interviews were conducted in 1992. The interviewees are: Helen Brown, Robbie Clarke, Susan Craig, Gwendolyn Jones, Esther McCall, Estelle Noble, Fannie Pennington, Olivia Pearl Stokes, Amy Terry, and Laura B. Thomas. Their remembrances date to the late 1920s, but the primary time period under discussion is from 1940 to 1970. Located in Harlem, Abyssinian was the first black Baptist church established in New York State (1808) and the fifth in the United States. The interviewer was Martia G. Goodson, an assistant professor at Baruch College at the time of the project. less
