Rouben Ter-Arutunian (1920-1992) was a scenic and costume designer best known for his long association with the New York City Ballet. The design portfolios are a comprehensive reflection of the artist's prolific forty-year career designing for theater, ballet, dance, opera, television, and motion picture productions. The portfolios are made up of materials mostly gathered together under a production's title and contain set and costume designs; set models; press material; photographs; design notes; technical drawings; business documentation; correspondence; and research and reference material. less

H. A. Condell was a stage and costume designer in Germany and in the United States. He received his early training under the notable Max Reinhardt and his early work was under the auspices of the Berlin Civic Opera and the non-Aryan theater (also known as the Jewish Kulterbund), of which he was co-founder. Condell emigrated to the United States in 1938. His first major production after emigrating was SAINT JOAN directed by Erwin Piscator and starring Luise Rainer. In 1944 he began his affiliation with the New York City Opera which continued until his death in 1951. Besides working as a designer, Condell also taught stage design at the Dramatic Workshop and the Technical Institute where he was art director under Erwin Piscator. The H.A. Condell Papers consist of correspondence, contracts, publicity and promotional materials. His papers reflect Condell's professional career as a stage and costume designer for opera and theater in Germany and the United States from 1929 until his death. less

The Patricia Brooks papers (1867, 1897-2009) document the professional vocal career of the artist, focusing on her operatic performances. The papers contain professional and personal correspondence; reproductions of photographs documenting her operatic career, including photographs of Brooks with Placido Domingo and Frank Corsaro; financial records and advanced ticket sales regarding Brooks' recital in 1977; as well as correspondence, notes, ticket lists, and potential performers relating to the New York City Opera's tribute to Brooks in 2008. Annotated, published scores make up the majority of the collection. less

Morton Baum was the chair of City Center’s Finance Committee from 1943 to 1968. In the 1960s he became its managing director. City Center was responsible for presenting many of the most important dance, music, opera and drama companies in New York City during the middle of the 20th Century. Baum was also instrumental in bringing that same quality of the arts to the newly-formed Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts Inc. The collection consists of administrative and financial material used in the creation and running of City Center. It also includes administrative and financial material about the creation of Lincoln Center of the Performing Arts. less

Since his arrival in New York City in 1939, Viennese-born Fred Fehl has devoted his life to photographing the performing arts. A pioneer in taking candid photographs during performances with available stage lighting, Fehl has documented productions from Broadway, the New York City Opera and Ballet, and American Ballet Theater. The Music Division collection consists primarily of image documentation of the New York City Opera from its inception in 1944 through 1980, as well as City Opera related images (staff, functions, etc.). There are also undated photographs of many rehearsals and some performances at Lewisohn Stadium, a small collection of photographs of composers in action, chiefly in the 1940's, and some images of other musical activity in New York City. The Music Division acquired the collection in two parts; an earlier set of photographs was added to the General Iconography and Opera Files. This later collection is separate, although it includes the negatives for many photographs from the earlier set. Wherever possible, concordance has been provided by the finding aid. less
