Part of the bequest of the late Louis Horst, this collection consists of five groups of manuscript materials: [Personal] Correspondence, Business Correspondence, Manuscripts, Records, and Miscellaneous items (mostly photostats of drawings and paintings). The personal correspondence, excepting a folder of letters from his mother to Louis Horst ca. 1928-29, is primarily social and congratulatory, i.e., telegrams, birthday cards, postcards, and Christmas cards. The business correspondence is almost exclusively concerned with [UNK] Observer, the magazine Mr. Horst founded in 1934 and edited until his death in 1964. The majority of the manuscripts, which comprise the bulk of the collection, are edited articles for Dance observer. There is, however, a notebook containing Mr. Horst's classes in pre-classic dance forms and modern dance forms, and a second notebook, possibly kept by Gertrude Lippincott, for a class in dance composition taught by Mr. Horst in [UNK]. Louis Horst (1884-1964) was a composer, choreographer and pianist who pioneered the use of contemporary music for dance scores. The Louis Horst Course Materials and Research collection consists of copied sheet music and notes used by Horst in conducting his classes at Juilliard and other institutions, as well as research materials on Louis Horst compiled by Janet Mansfield Soares. less

The Louis Horst Papers document his professional, and primarily his personal, life from 1962 to 1964. There are, however, letters and contractual information dating back as early as 1935 and 1959. The importance of this collection lies in its personal nature. The appreciation, gratitude, and honor bestowed upon Horst by students, contemporaries, supporters, and friends is repeated again and again in the correspondence written to him. The content consists mainly of correspondence to Horst by friends, such as Gertrude Lippincott, and dance associates, such as Harriet Berg. There is also correspondence from relatives, primarily May, his sister, George, her husband, and Betty, Horst's wife. less

Chicago-born dancer and choreographer Marion Scott studied with Martha Graham, Doris Humphrey, Charles Weidman, Helen Tamiris and Daniel Nagrin, José Limón, Hanya Holm, and Anna Sokolow. She performed in the companies of Graham and Humphrey-Weidman, and was a leading dancer in the Tamiris-Nagrin Dance Company from 1955-1965. She was a teaching assistant to both Humphrey and Tamiris, and, in 1963, was made a Doris Humphrey fellow at Connecticut College. In the late 1940's she began performing her own choreography and for 20 years headed her own company, working with dancers Cliff Keuter and Elina Mooney (Marion Scott Dance Trio) and Don Redlich. She was co-founder of Contemporary Dance Productions, an organization that help provide opportunities to young choreographers to present their work in jointly shared programs. In 1969, Scott, finding her movement severely impaired by hip problems, went to the University of California in Los Angeles where she was Professor of Dance and resident choreographer for the UCLA Dance Company. Hip-replacement surgery forced an end to her active performing. Nevertheless, in 1985, at age 62, she created a solo entitled Psalm 1984,which she performed with the UCLA Dance Company. In 2002 at the Japan America Center, she received the Dance Resource Center's Lestor Horton Lifetime Achievement Award. A collection of personal letters, cards, notes, telegrams, and photographs. With the exception of several photographs from Miss Scott (Goldberg)'s adolescence, the material reflects her association with the Humphrey-Weidman Company, the 92nd Street YM-YWHA, and the Tamiris-Nagrin Company. The Jean Erdman Papers document the professional life of Jean Erdman Campbell, a dancer, choreographer, and dance instructor. Materials date from the late 1930s to the mid-1990s, and cover the early stages of her career as well as productions created during her later endeavors at the Theater of the Open Eye. This collection contains correspondence, production materials, academic papers, office files, financial and legal papers, scrapbooks, publicity materials, and photographs. This collection contains almost no materials related to Jean Erdman's personal life. less

Mary Wigman (1886-1973) was a German dancer, dance instructor, and choreographer notable for her work in expressionist dance. Her many students included Yvonne Georgi, Hanya Holm, Harald Kreutzberg, Gret Palucca, Margarethe Wallmann, Inge Weiss, and Meta Vidmar. Nancy Brock was also a student of Wigman's from 1953 to 1954, and they maintained a correspondence until Wigman's death. This collection documents the relationship between Wigman and Brock through their personal correspondence, photographs, articles that Brock and others wrote about Wigman, and preparations for "Mary Wigman Day" in 1958 as well as Wigman's 80th birthday celebration. It also contains some of Brock's correspondence with others in the dance field, including Lincoln Kirstein, John Martin, Charles Weidman, and Louis Horst, as well as Brock's lecture notes from her time as a student. less
