Black Books Plus was a bookstore located in Manhattan that operated from 1989 to 1999. It was owned and operated by Glenderlyn Johnson, a former Schomburg Center librarian, and was one of the few Black-owned bookstores in New York City. The bookstore hosted around 200 book signings with notable and sometimes lesser known Black authors. The Black Books Plus records document the bookstore's event planning, correspondence, stock inventory, and other administrative records. less

Kanya Vashon McGhee, also known as Kanya KéKumbha, was the owner of the Tree of Life Books of Harlem, a metaphysical bookstore formerly located in Harlem, New York. His father, Norman L. McGhee Sr., was the first African American licensed to trade stocks in the Midwest, and the first African American to own a brokerage firm and mutual investment fund in the United States.
