Frederick Starr (1858-1933) was an American anthropologist and ethnologist. He taught biology at Coe College and geography at Chautauqua University and worked as a classifier in the Dept. of Ethnology at the American Museum of Natural History. In 1891 he taught geology and anthropology at Pomona College and the following year organized the Anthropology Dept. at the University of Chicago where he taught until his retirement in 1923. Collection consists of correspondence, reports, lectures, vocabularies, documents, and related materials of Starr and others. Bulk of the papers deals with Starr's work as an anthropologist among the Indian tribes of southern Mexico and includes Spanish translations of poetry and folk tales, vocabularies of Spanish works with Indian translations, anthropometrical data, and Mexican government documents of the 1860s. Also, lectures, studies, reports, and thesis by others; materials concerning Starr's work in Liberia and the Congo; and miscellaneous items relating to China, Japan and Korea. less

The W. Ward Smith genealogical research papers contains William Ward Smith's genealogical notes, essays, clippings, charts, correspondence, ca. 1920s-1940s; original family letters and documents; and photographs relating to Smith's genealogical research on the Smith family of New York and New England, including the Smiths of Lyme, Conn., and the related Berrien, Cowenhoven, Eliot, Elwes, Leverich, Mather, Riker, Suydam, Trowbridge, Vandevoort, and Ward families. Notable content includes letters, 1816-1851, of Henry Elwes, a Catholic priest, including letters, 1834-1839, while at the English College, Rome, Italy, to his brother Alfred Elwes, a U.S. Army doctor at Fort Hamilton, Long Island, N.Y. (great-grandfather of W. Ward Smith) concerning family, health, personal, and political matters, as well as Elwes' work and training in the priesthood, and from the 1840s-1850s, when he was at Cossey Hall, Norwich, England, written to other family members. The collection also contain letters, 1886-1910, to Smith's grandfather, Albert Mather Smith, Engineer of Distribution for the Consolidated Gas Company of New York City concerning aspects of the gas, lighting, and power business. Photographs includes images of W. Ward Smith as a child, and his parents, Eliza Palmer Ward Smith, and Charles Albert Smith, in Garrison, N.Y. and elsewhere; also, a carte-de-visite of Captain Albert M. Smith, Baltimore, 1862, and two stereoscopic views, one of men of Co. D, 7th N.Y.N.G. at Camp Cameron, Washington D.C., 1861; and of officers of the 37th N.Y.S.M. at Capt. Albert M. Edith O'Shaughnessy (d. 1939) was an American author of fiction and autobiographical narratives concerning her life abroad. She was active in causes related to the Roman Catholic Church. Her husband, Nelson O'Shaughnessy (1876-1932), was a U.S. career diplomat who was stationed in Denmark, Russia, Austria-Hungary, and Mexico. After leaving the diplomatic service, he had a career in private industry. Elim O'Shaughnessy (1907-1966), Edith and Nelson O'Shaughnessy's son, joined the diplomatic service and served in France, the Soviet Union, Britain, and Hungary. Collection contains materials relating to Edith, Nelson and Elim O'Shaughnessy. Correspondence of Nelson O'Shaughnessy, 1899-1928, concerns diplomatic matters, his career in business, and personal and family affairs; correspondence of Edith O'Shaughnessy, 1907-1936, relates to her social and diplomatic life, war work in France, political activities, career as author of books and articles, and family matters. Some financial records are included with the correspondence. Her notes and diaries, 1907-1935, are largely social in nature. Writings include annotated typescripts and manuscripts of her published and unpublished works. Didion and Dunne's papers date from the 1840s through 2022 (bulk dates 1950s-2010s) and chronicle their literary and screenwriting careers through correspondence, publishing files, notes for writing projects, photographs, and research files.
