The Index of New Musical Notation was a research project formed in 1971 in New York City by music editor and writer Kurt Stone to bring unity and standards to modern music notation. The Index developed out of a committee at the Music Library Association and was housed and administered by the Music Division at the Library of the Performing Arts, New York Public Library. The records contain office files and materials relating to the three main projects of the Index, the original notation indexing project, its sponsorship of the International Conference on New Musical Notation in Ghent, and the Questionnaire on New Musical Notation. The collection as a whole demonstrates the development of methods for researching, categorizing, and establishing a more universal lexicon of musical notation. less

Martha Hill (1900-1995) was one of the most influential dance instructors of the 20th century and the first director of the Juilliard Dance Division. Janet Mansfield Soares worked with Martha Hill as a student, colleague, and teacher of dance composition at the Juilliard School. The Martha Hill research materials (1870-1995) contain personal and professional papers created by Martha Hill and compiled by Janet Soares, as well as materials created by Soares in the course of her research for her book on Martha Hill, Martha Hill and the Making of American Dance. less

A few items in the collection appear to have been created by Celli's wife, Marion Ivell. A violinist and conductor, Max Pollikoff was born in Newark, N.J., in 1904, and died in New York City in 1984. He organized Music in Our Time, a concert series which ran from 1954 to 1974 at the 92nd St. YMHA, New York. Published and unpublished music by various composers with markings by Pollikoff, scrapbook, programs, clippings, photographs, poster, receipts, checks, contracts, brochures, pamphlets, periodicals, address books, appointment books, memorabilia, and correspondence including letters relating to Music In Our Time. less

Don Redlich (born in 1929) is a dancer, choreographer, and pedagogue. The Don Redlich papers, dating from 1893 to 2019 (the bulk dates from the 1940s onward), document Redlich's life and career through written descriptions and videos from The Legacy of Hanya Holm: Don Redlich Remembers project; manuscripts and interviews for an unpublished memoir; Don Redlich Dance Company files; Dance Notation Bureau files; Redlich's teaching files; files devoted to Redlich's teachers; letters; school files; photographs; scrapbooks; programs and reviews; posters; datebooks; address books; drawings; family history papers; and audio and moving image recordings, which hold many performances by the Don Redlich Dance Company. Brooke Russell Astor (1902-2007) was a New York City philanthropist and socialite. She was president of the Vincent Astor Foundation, established by her husband Vincent Astor (1891-1959), from 1960 to 1997. Mrs. Astor also served on the boards of various civic, charitable, and cultural institutions, including The New York Public Library and The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Brooke Russell Astor address books, dated circa 1959-1970s, identify her personal, social, political, and philanthropic contacts, including many prominent persons in the United States and abroad. The volumes are small commercially-bound black leather loose-leaf binders; contact information is typescript, with some handwritten entries and revisions. Entries under each alphabetical letter are arranged in three categories: Personal, Foreign, and Business. Useful contacts are found at the front of each book, along with details for her local and out-of-state residences. Loose cards and notes, most undated, have been removed to separate housing. Among them are two brief social notes, one from Chauncey [Chauncey Devereaux Stillman], 1963, and one on Plaza Hotel stationary from a visiting friend, 1960.
