Dr. Bernhard Stern was a lecturer in anthropology at Columbia University in the 1930s and 1940s with a particular interest in race relations. Dr. Alain Locke was Professor of Philosophy at Harvard University and the principal spokesman of the "New Negro Movement," the black arts movement of the 1920s. Correspondence between Bernhard Stern and Alain Locke, co-editors of When Peoples Meet, A Study in Race and Cultural Contacts (1946), a book on race relations. Letters document the working relationship between the two and some of the work that went into finalizing and publicizing the book. Also research notes and correspondence re: Stern's and Melville Jacob's book Outline of Anthropology; a file (1939-1942) related to Stern's involvement with the Carnegie Corporation "Negro in America" study, including memoranda from Gunnar Myrdal and Doxey Wilkerson, another project participant; also Stern's lecture notes for courses in anthropology at the New School for Social Research, 1930s-1950. less

The Robert Klein papers consist of both personal and professional correspondence, papers from organizational affiliations in the United States and Europe, materials regarding projects, articles written by Klein and ephemera documenting his careeer both in the United States and in Europe. The materials are in English and German and there is much in the collection from the 1930s dealing with Max Reinhardt. Later materials in the collection document his career as a professor of drama in United States colleges. less

Koppel Shub Pinson (1904-1961) was an American educator and historian who specialized in German and Jewish history. He taught at Queens College of the City University of New York from 1937 to 1961. Collection consists of correspondence, a few personal papers, writings, lecture notes and outlines, teaching and student records, research notes, and printed material pertaining largely to Pinson's academic career. Correspondence, 1930s-1960s, is with colleagues and other scholars in the U.S. and abroad. Personal file contains photograph of Pinson, announcements of his lectures and tributes to him. Writings include typescripts of his articles, notes and outlines for his public lectures, and teaching file consisting of materials for courses he taught at Queens College and the New School. Also, student records as an undergraduate at the University of Pennsylvania and as graduate student at Columbia University; research notes for his dissertation and book, Modern Germany; bibliographies of works relating to Russian history and literature and to Jews and antisemitism; and scrapbook of clippings. less

Laura Foreman was the director of dance at the New School. Her Laura Foreman Dance Theater performed extensively in the 1970s and her Composers and Choreographers Theater gave exposure to new and avant-garde choreographers. Collection includes choreography notes, scripts, correspondence and teaching material. less

The Frank Wigglesworth Papers document Wigglesworth's life and career. The collection was assembled by Wigglesworth over the course of his lifetime, and includes musical scores, correspondence, clippings, programs, miscellaneous papers, iconography, and books. Correspondents include Henry and Sidney Cowell, Lou Harrison, Otto Luening, Virgil Thomson, and Edgard Varèse among many others. Maurice Sendak and Adlai Stevenson are represented by one letter each. Lou Harrison's letter of February 12, 1952, contains the autograph score of his Serenade for Guitar, spontaneously composed for Wigglesworth. Series A/4 contains other autograph scores by Harrison and by Otto Luening, a manuscript score by Vittorio Rieti, and reproductions of manuscript scores by Paul Arma, Chester Biscardi, Edward V. Bonnemere, Richard Brooks, John Cage, Gerald C. Chenoweth, Edward T. Cone, Stefania M. De Kenessey, Aaron Einbond, Daniel S. Godfrey, Daron Aric Hagen, Jose Halac, Reiko Ito, Barbara Kolb, Robert Maggio, Denman Maroney, Henry Martin, Lucas Mason, Richard Owen, Peter Phillips, David L. Laura Foreman (1937-2001) was a dancer, choreographer, founder of the Laura Foreman Dance Company and director of dance at the New School. John Watts (1929-1982) was an American composer, pioneer of electronic music, and director of The New School. Foreman and Watts frequently collaborated on artistic performances. The collection, dated 1965 to 1984, consists mostly of printed matter generated from Laura Foreman and John Watts' work at The New School's The Composers' and Choreographers' Theatre. The collection holds clippings, flyers, photographs, posters, and programs. less
