The Smith family of Brookhaven, Suffolk County, N.Y. is descended from John "Rock" Smith, fl. 1665. Smith family documents, 1736-1942, consist primarily of deeds and other contracts concerning the Smith family of Brookhaven, N.Y. The collection includes indentures for land transactions, records of road surveys, wills, articles of agreement for employment, tenant leases, subpoenas, land search records, specifications for building a house, mortgages, accounts, receipts for payment of back taxes and a small amount of correspondence. Also present are inventories of household items, farm implements, and livestock in the possession of Joshua and Lucy Smith at the time of his death in 1811, and of their son Richard Wallace Smith's household items at the time of his death in 1868, as well as a photocopy of a Smith family tree. less

The W. Ward Smith genealogical research papers contains William Ward Smith's genealogical notes, essays, clippings, charts, correspondence, ca. 1920s-1940s; original family letters and documents; and photographs relating to Smith's genealogical research on the Smith family of New York and New England, including the Smiths of Lyme, Conn., and the related Berrien, Cowenhoven, Eliot, Elwes, Leverich, Mather, Riker, Suydam, Trowbridge, Vandevoort, and Ward families. Notable content includes letters, 1816-1851, of Henry Elwes, a Catholic priest, including letters, 1834-1839, while at the English College, Rome, Italy, to his brother Alfred Elwes, a U.S. Army doctor at Fort Hamilton, Long Island, N.Y. (great-grandfather of W. Ward Smith) concerning family, health, personal, and political matters, as well as Elwes' work and training in the priesthood, and from the 1840s-1850s, when he was at Cossey Hall, Norwich, England, written to other family members. The collection also contain letters, 1886-1910, to Smith's grandfather, Albert Mather Smith, Engineer of Distribution for the Consolidated Gas Company of New York City concerning aspects of the gas, lighting, and power business. Ward Smith as a child, and his parents, Eliza Palmer Ward Smith, and Charles Albert Smith, in Garrison, N.Y. and elsewhere; also, a carte-de-visite of Captain Albert M. George Peabody Wetmore was the 37th governor of Rhode Island and later a U.S. senator from the State. The George Peabody Wetmore papers consist chiefly of his correspondence with dealers, librarians, and others regarding the location or purchase of books, papers, and portraits associated with American loyalist William Smith Jr. and his family, and the acquisition of Smith's papers by The New York Public Library. Also present is his daughter Maude A.K. Wetmore's correspondence regarding John Wollaston’s portrait of William Smith Jr., acquired by her father; the original label for the portrait; photographs of the portrait; Smith family bookplates; and some printed matter concerning Smith. The collection was originally described as a scrapbook; materials are not bound together. Original letters and documents pertaining to William Smith Jr., his father William Smith (1697-1769), and his brother Joshua Hett Smith have been transferred to the Division's Miscellaneous Personal Name Files collection; photocopies are retained in this collection. less
