Henry Hunter Peters, merchant and farmer, had a mercantile business in California and then farmed in Southboro, Mass. Collection consists of diaries, correspondence, accounts, lectures, photographs, and printed matter. Diaries, 1850-1856, describe Peters's journeys by steamer from New York to California and Oregon; his life as a merchant in California during the early period of the gold rush; and life on his dairy farm in Southboro, Mass. Includes personal and business letters; mercantile accounts of Peters and Hazeltine and Scranton and Peters in San Francisco and Sacramento; lectures on farming and on his 1871 trip to Europe; and diary, 1851-1852, of H.C. Leonard in Astoria, Oregon, containing a vocabulary of a North American Indian language (Chinook?) and a daguerreotype portrait of Peters, ca. 1848. less

John W. Bell lived in Utica and Albany, New York. He kept this diary (2 vols.) during a voyage from New York to San Francisco via Cape Horn on board the schooner "Gager" from February 14-September 12, 1849. The ship stopped at Rio de Janeiro, Montevideo, and Callao, with an overnight visit to Lima. Bell writes of the trials of ship life, the terrible storms and the calms they encountered, their first (unsuccessful) attempt to round Cape Horn, and homesickness during the months at sea, with no means of receiving mail. He also describes the pleasures of beautiful weather and passing other ships, including one from Bremen loaded with German emigrants headed for California Entries made from October through December 1849 recount Bell's party's departure from San Francisco for the gold country, camping along the way, their arrival and permanent camp set-up, and the value of the gold dug each day. At the end of the diary are a number of expense accounts, including traveling, camp equipment, and provisions. Barometer readings are recorded for June 3-August 4, 1849 less

John Henry Cornelison kept this diary during a trip from New York to San Francisco on board the bark "Hannah Sprague" as a member of the New York Commercial and Mining Association. Entries date from May 10, 1849 through January 14, 1850 and describe daily life on shipboard; amusements and other pastimes; other passengers; other ships passed en route; and stops at Rio de Janeiro, Talcahuano (Chile), and an inland trip to Concepción. Cornelison provides a vivid description of San Francisco, where he lived aboard the ship while awaiting return passage. The diary also contains information about the price of food (eggs, butter, and other staples); the cost of rent; descriptions of buildings; activities of inhabitants, and other specific details about San Francisco. Cornelison also includes some details about the management of the New York Commercial and Mining Association and its final dissolution.
