Howard A. Thomas (ca. 1899-1998) was a genealogist who received a B.F.A. degree from Cornell University in 1934; he and his wife, Ida Mae Sincerbeaux Thomas, lived in Long Island City, New York. Genealogical research papers of Howard A. Thomas, mostly relating to his and his wife's family histories, in the form of typed and handwritten research notes, correspondence (much of it with family members), charts, copies of legal documents, certificates, wills, deeds, and vital records. The principal famlies researched are Ambler, Berry, Doyle, Draper, Dungan, Odell, Peet, Sincerbeaux (Sinsabaugh), Thomas, Timpson (Timson), and Vanderburgh, who settled in Connecticut, Maryland, New York, Nova Scotia, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and elsewhere. There is also some 19th century correspondence between Berry family members; also included are notes from the actresses Glenn Close and Julie Harris, and cartoonist Dick Moores, as well as material on the ancestry of model and actress Brooke Shields. less

The Sharpe-Stevens family papers include genealogical research notes and family papers on the ancestors of Rosa Sharpe Stevens and, to a lesser extent, her husband Yale Stevens. Families include the Sharpes of Pennsylvania and the related Alden, Denison, Montgomery, Patterson, Sill and Yale familes of Connecticut and elsewhere in New England. The collection contains original Sharpe family correspondence, dating from 1895 to 1934, as well as copies of letters to and from Rosa Stevens' grandfather, Pennsylvania coal industry pioneer Richard Sharpe, 1856-1894, which discuss the illness and death of his daughter Emily, his coal business, arrangements for his son to attend the school of Rev. Dr. Lyons of West Haverford, PA, and other personal and business matters. Family correspondence of 1907 contains preliminary discussions with sculptor Frank Edwin Elwell regarding the commission of a sculpture honoring one of the family's revolutionary war ancestors. Also present is an 1898 diary of Rosa's aunt Elizabeth Montgomery Sharpe and a letter she received from Jane Addams in 1895. Stevens family correspondence, 1898-1951, is chiefly addressed to Rosa Stevens or "Cousin Mary." Of note are copies of three letter of Charles J. Stevens written from Cuba during the Spanish-American War. The remainder of the collection includes genealogical notes, photocopied newspaper clippings, and charts. less

Edwin Riley McCarty was born in Pennsylvania in 1830 and worked in the hotel industry in New York City. The McCarty family genealogical research papers consist mainly of the correspondence of Edwin R. McCarty, dating 1869-1903, concerning his genealogical research on the McCarty family of Pennsylvania. McCarty traced the descendants of Thomas McCarty and Elizabeth Lancaster, both of Bucks County, who were married in 1765. The collection includes a few letters to and from Aaron Lancaster, 1853-1854, genealogical notes, family trees, and a map of northern Bucks County showing land held by the McCartys, as well as miscellaneous clippings and printed material. The collection also includes manuscript and typescript copies of an 1880 essay, The Families of Lancaster and McCarty: A Sketch by R. B. H. of New York. less
