The Samuel Hill papers consist of his autobiography, his journal of a voyage of the brig Ulysses, unidentified poetry, and writings by F. Stanhope Hill about Samuel Hill, all bound in one volume; a bound copy of the autobiography in negative photostat, edited and incomplete; and the illustrated journal and logbook of the ships Ophelia and Packet in one volume. less

Sir Robert Spencer Robinson kept this volume, which contains a log of the H.M.S. Yarrow and the H.M.S. Dublin, as well as notes about the H.M.S. Hydra and the H.M.S. Arrogant. The H.M.S. Dublin log was kept from August 2, 1831-May 4, 1832, when the ship traveled from Plymouth, England to Rio de Janeiro, Valparaiso, and Callao. The H.M.S. Yarrow log was kept while the ship was along the coast of Peru, from February 10-November 22, 1833. The volume contains notes relative to harbors, winds, currents, supplies, fresh water, etc. to be had on the coast of Peru northwest of Callao. It also contains notes on the performances of engines and other equipment of the H.M.S. Hydra in 1840 and the H.M.S. Henry Packer Dering (d. 1822) was a collector of customs, postmaster and military storekeeper in Sag Harbor, Long Island. He also traded at Aux Cayes, Haiti, as an agent of Nat Gardinier, during the 1780's. Collection consists of correspondence, diary, legal records, sermons, and other papers. Correspondence concerns family and business affairs, seafaring, United States Customs, and military stores; diary, 1787-1788, relates to sales at Aux Cayes, Haiti, of cargoes of fish and horses from the sloop Polly, of Sag Harbor, N.Y.; and deeds and other documents pertain to land on Long Island. Includes probated wills; a volume containing sermons, 1692-1694; cash accounts of contributions for preaching, 1791-1795; stud records, 1790, of the stallion Young Figure at Sag Harbor; and letters of Dering's father, Thomas Dering, and of his children and business associates. Also, drafts of eighteen letters, 1787, written from Aux Cayes, Haiti, while Dering was agent for Nat Gardinier, addressed to Gardinier and to relatives and friends in Sag Harbor concerning trade, local conditions, wages of ship captains while in port, and other topics. less

Mariner James Copland kept this logbook aboard the Boxer (on which he was employed by John Jacob Astor) from March 1-May 9, 1818; the America from January 28-June 17, 1819; the Cadmus, captained by Reuben Brumly, from September 1, 1819-January 25, 1820; and the Seneca from June 1, 1820-February 6, 1821. Entries record the ships' voyages from New York to Hamburg and St. Petersburg; Madeira to Calcutta; Calcutta to New York; New York to Cape Verde, Montevideo, Cuba, and back to New York. Includes observations, happenings on board, entertainment at ports, sightseeing at Elsinore, quarantine and customs regulations, information about the cost of goods, weekly Bible classes on the Seneca, the death of [?] Hyslop, supercargo on the Seneca, and other matters. Also included is a "Public Instrument of Declaration and Protest," dated July 1824, found in the logbook, in which Copland recorded events leading to the confiscation of the ship General Brown and its cargo in the port of Callao, Peru during Peru's war for independence. John Henry Cornelison kept this diary during a trip from New York to San Francisco on board the bark "Hannah Sprague" as a member of the New York Commercial and Mining Association. Entries date from May 10, 1849 through January 14, 1850 and describe daily life on shipboard; amusements and other pastimes; other passengers; other ships passed en route; and stops at Rio de Janeiro, Talcahuano (Chile), and an inland trip to Concepción. Cornelison provides a vivid description of San Francisco, where he lived aboard the ship while awaiting return passage. The diary also contains information about the price of food (eggs, butter, and other staples); the cost of rent; descriptions of buildings; activities of inhabitants, and other specific details about San Francisco. Cornelison also includes some details about the management of the New York Commercial and Mining Association and its final dissolution. Gilbert Jenkins Jr. was a mariner from Hudson, Columbia County, New York. He was the son of Gilbert Jenkins of Hudson, New York (died 1846 in Prairieville, Wisconsin), and the grandson of Thomas Jenkins (1741-1808) of Nantucket, Massachusetts, one of the founders of Hudson. The collection comprises four letters written by Gilbert Jenkins Jr. to family members, dated 1833-1835, while a seaman on the whaling ship America, cruising in the Pacific Ocean. The ship America was owned by the Hudson Whaling Company and commanded by Captain Folger. less
