Roger Wood, a British photographer, was born in Madras, India, 1920. Starting to photograph ballet in 1944, he soon became one of the best know dance photographers in Great Britain. He has published several books of dance photographs, including Katherine Dunham, her Dancers, Singers, Musicians(Richard Buckle, editor, 1949), The Sadler's Wells Ballet at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden(1951), and The Theatre Ballet of Sadler's Wells in photographs(1952). His interest later turned to archeology and photography and has published works on Egypt, Saudi Arabian antiquities, and Persia. Collection includes studio, action, travel, informal and portrait prints of dancers, dance companies, theatrical productions, motion pictures, and ballet special events. Arranged in albums alphabetically, by dancer's surname or by dance company name. Each dance company's prints are further arranged alphabetically by dance title or dancer's name. The prints for each title are arranged as they appeared on the film roll, and may have been taken during more than one performance; therefore, does not necessarily reflect the choreographic sequence. Many of the prints are contact sheets and other proofs. Numbers on verso of each print correspond to the photographic negative numbers assigned by Roger Wood; see his register of negative numbers in Photographic negatives of dancers and dance companies, *MGZEN 95-5483, box 28. The Carolyn George Photographs consist of approximately 100,000 images: black and white and color prints, contact sheets, negatives, and slides of both dance and non-dance subjects photographed by Carolyn George from the 1950s to 2005. The collection also contains some family photographs and childhood photographs of George and spans from circa 1800-2005 (bulk dates 1970-1998). less

Mary De Haven Hinkson (1925 to 2014) was an influential African American dancer, teacher, and choreographer. The collection dates from 1942 to 2012 and contains photographs from Martha Graham Company tours, oral history interview transcripts, correspondence, contracts, notes, programs, and other printed matter. A small amount of writing on dance and choreography elucidate Hinkson's thoughts on teaching and technique. less

The James and Charles Daugherty collection dates from about 1915 to 1938 and contains drawings by American artists and children's book authors James Henry Daugherty and his son Charles. The collection is primarily comprised of studies of American dancer Ted Shawn by James; and a sketchbook that belonged to Charles, documenting a trip he took with Lincoln Kirstein and the Ballet Caravan in 1938. less

Fern Helscher was the publicist and booking agent for Ted Shawn and His Men Dancers in the 1930s, promoting and arranging the company’s performances and tours in the United States and Europe. With the establishment of Jacob’s Pillow as an educational and performance venue, Helscher served as the business manager, and publicist for the theater. Her close relationship with Ted Shawn was the basis for her possession of an extraordinary array of documents and photographs that evidence Mr. Shawn’s artistic career, as well as her own professional acumen and efforts. Her collection consists of personal papers, client documents and photographs, travel related materials, papers and photographs of Ted Shawn and Jacob’s Pillow, and personal and dance photographs. less
