Scope and arrangement
This is a synthetic collection consisting of correspondence written by the author between 1967 and 1975. The collection is comprised of letters, with replies, to Nelson Algren, Hannah Arendt, Saul Bellow, John Cheever, John Dos Passos, Leon Edel, Herbert Gold, Nadine Gordimer, Robert Graves, Graham Greene, Christopher Isherwood, Alfred Kazin, Doris Lessing, Archibald MacLeish, Norman Mailer, Iris Murdoch, Vladimir Nabokov, Philip Roth, William Saroyan, Stephen Spender, John Updike, Kurt Vonnegut, Robert Penn Warren, Thornton Wilder, and others, as well as articles contributed to the New York Times. There are letters written to Mitgang from Kay Boyle, Archibald Colquhoun, Walter Lord, Herbert L. Matthews, Sir Osbert Sitwell, and others, dating from 1950 to 1986.
