Adams wrote Watership Down, his first novel, over two years. After many publishers and agents rejected the novel, Rex Collings, an English publisher, agreed to risk his money and publish it at his company, Rex Collings Ltd. The book won the Carnegie Medal and the Guardian Prize.
Adams died in Oxford, England in 2016.
The Richard Adams letter to Rex Collings, dated October 8, 1970, is a typed letter signed by him. In the letter, Adams discusses possible titles for what was then titled Hazel and Fiver, but would become Watership Down. He also describes the map that was included in the first edition of the novel.
