Charles Dickens (1812-1870) was a British writer, journalist, and social critic. The Charles Dickens tortoiseshell reading glasses, manufactured around 1860, consist of his glasses and a glasses case, as well as a note of attestation by his sister-in-law, Georgina Hogarth.

Some of his well-known works include A Christmas Carol (1843), Oliver Twist (1838), and Great Expectations (1861). His works were widely read and highly regarded during his lifetime and after his death.
Dickens owned a country home, Gad's Hill Place, in Higham, England, for the last fourteen years of his life. He died at home in Higham, England in 1870.
The Charles Dickens tortoiseshell reading glasses, manufactured about 1860, are composed of the glasses housed in a case with his monogram on the lid. The collection also holds an autograph note of attestation signed by Dickens's sister-in-law, Georgina Hogarth, stating that Dickens used the glasses to write and read "at Gads Hill, from the time he went there to live until his death – 9th June 1870."
