Samuel Langhorne Clemens (1835-1910) was an American writer, humorist, and literary and social critic who wrote under the pseudonym Mark Twain. Olivia Susan "Susy" Clemens (1872-1896) was Samuel Clemens's eldest daughter. "In Memory of Olivia Susan Clemens, 1872-1896" consists of a biographical autograph manuscript by Samuel Clemens about Susy Clemens and an envelope.
Samuel Langhorne Clemens (1835-1910) was an American novelist, short story writer, essayist, journalist, and literary and social critic who wrote under the pseudonym Mark Twain, among others. He grew up in Hannibal, Missouri, a location which inspired the setting of his novels The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884).
In 1870, Clemens married Olivia Langdon in Elmira, New York. The couple had four children: Langdon Clemens (1870-1872), Olivia Susan Clemens (1872-1896), Clara Langdon Clemens (1874-1962), and Jane Lampton Clemens (1880-1909).
Clemens died in Redding, Connecticut, in 1910.
"In Memory of Olivia Susan Clemens, 1872-1896," dated circa 1902, consists of two items by Samuel Langhorne Clemens, an autograph manuscript and an autograph envelope. The autograph manuscript, dated 1902, is a memoir Clemens wrote about his eldest daughter's life. The envelope, dated circa 1902, holds an autograph inscription, "I think we copied this into the Auto. Inquire. If so destroy this at once."
