Charles Dickens (1812-1870) was a British novelist, journalist, short story writer, essayist, and social critic. Some of his well-known works include A Christmas Carol (1843), Oliver Twist (1838), and Great Expectations (1861). His works were widely read and highly regarded during his lifetime and after his death.
During Dicken's visit to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in March 1842, Edgar Allan Poe wrote to him to request an interview. Dickens agreed to be interviewed and they met twice that month. During those two meetings, Dickens promised to help Poe find a British publisher for Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque. Dickens forgot about his promise to Poe until Poe wrote him a reminder. Dickens ultimately could not find a British publisher for Poe's Tales.
Dickens died in Higham, England, in 1870.
