Autograph letter signed "your loving Virginia" by British author Virginia Woolf (1882-1941) at Athens, Greece, September 19, 1906, to family friend Susan Lushington (1870-1953) at Kingsley, Alton, Hampshire. Woolf (then Virginia Stephen) was traveling in Greece at the time with her siblings Vanessa, Thoby, and Adrian Stephen. The letter conveys their shock and sorrow on learning of the death of Susan's sister, Margaret Massingberd of Gunby Hall, Lincolnshire. Woolf mentions Margaret's kindness to her family at the death of their half-sister Stella Duckworth (1869-1897), and expresses sympathy to Susan and her sister Kitty Maxse. Susan Lushington, a musician and patron of musical arts, was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire in 1943
