The Mid-Manhattan Library, accommodating the college student and the general reader, located in the six-story building at the southeast corner of Fifth Avenue and Fortieth Street, is the central branch and the administrative headquarters of the Branch Libraries system of NYPL. The building, originally occupied by the Arnold Constable Department Store, was purchased by NYPL in the early 1960s, and an administrative survey of the space was undertaken and completed.</p>"}
