{"value"=>"<p>John Mackenzie Cory was born in Asheville, North Carolina on January 13, 1914. He was raised in New York City and in California. He received a B.A. degree in history in 1936, and a Librarianship Certificate in 1937, both from the University of California at Berkeley. Cory began his professional career as a librarian at Berkeley, then did graduate work at the University of Chicago Library School. He was Director of Libraries at the University of Alabama (Tuscaloosa) from 1940 to 1942, then spent a year as Senior Public Library Specialist in the U.S. Office of Education. Later during World War II, Cory was Chief of the Library Program Division with the U.S. Office of War Information. He entered the United States Air Force as a Chief Warrant Officer for the Transport Command in 1943 and served until 1945. He was awarded the Legion of Merit in 1946. From 1945 to 1948 Cory was Associate Librarian at UC Berkeley, and served as Executive Secretary of the American Library Association (ALA) beginning in 1948.</p> <p>Cory began his career at The New York Public Library in 1951, when he was appointed Chief of the Circulation Department, later known as the Branch Libraries. Cory administered NYPL's network of eighty branches in Manhattan, the Bronx, and Staten Island and was involved in the planning of the Donnell Library. In June 1963 Cory was appointed to the newly created post of Deputy Director. In this position, which he held through 1970, Cory shared with Director Edward Geier Freehafer the work of planning, development, and general direction of both the Research Libraries and the Branch Libraries. Cory then served as Director of The New York Public Library from January 1971 until August 1978.</p> <p> Significant accomplishments in Cory's NYPL career include construction of The Mid-Manhattan Library, The Performing Arts Library and Museum at Lincoln Center, and The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, the establishment of the Systems Analysis & Data Processing Office (SADPO) which did pioneering work in Library automation, and negotiations with the District Council 37, Local 1930, a union of Library workers. Also during Cory's tenure The Library suffered severe financial problems resulting from high inflation and sharp cuts in funds from New York City.</p> <p>For many years Cory was adjunct professor at the Columbia University School of Library Service, and in 1958 he taught for three months at Keio University, Tokyo. From 1966 to 1970, Cory served as the Executive Director of the Metropolitan Reference and Research Library Agency (METRO), which was then headquartered at the NYPL. Retiring in 1978, Cory became a consultant with Gossage Regan Associates, a library personnel firm.</p> <p> Cory married Jeanne Tinneman, a journalist, on August 17, 1940. The couple had four children, and later divorced. Cory married Patricia O'Connell Blair on August 22, 1951. After his second wife's death, Cory married Rosella Murray, an NYPL staff member. John Mackenzie Cory died in 1988.</p>"}

Files document projects involving NYPL and academic institutions, government bodies, other libraries, professional groups, booksellers, contributors, and firms offering technical resources. For example, access to funding and grants for specific programs was negotiated with such government agencies as the National Endowment for the Humanities and the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. Possible educational cooperative ventures were being planned with the State University of New York (SUNY) and the City University of New York (CUNY). The correspondence also documents discussions concerning internal NYPL policies and plans for buildings and facilities. Included are materials concerning the implementation of new technology, proposals for Harlem libraries, plans for Bryant Park, collections deeded to NYPL, acknowledgements of contributions from donors and folders on such issues as minority hiring, copyright laws, demonstrations against the U.S. war against Vietnam, poverty programs, prison libraries and pornography.
