{"value"=>"
42nd Street was Stewart's last collaboration with Gower Champion, who died on the day the show opened in New York in 1980. A David Merrick production, the show was based on the Hollywood musical and the original book by Bradford Ropes, with songs by Harry Warren and Al Dubin. Stewart and Mark Bramble were originally credited only with \"lead ins and crossovers\", but eventually received credit for their authorship of the book.

The bulk of the files for 42nd Street are made up of drafts and scripts (1978-1986) in chronological order, with additional folders of revisions, changes and individual scenes. Scripts include versions for Las Vegas and Chicago, a script with a speech for Dolores Gray (1983), and the stock and amateur version. Also included are files on casting (1980-1986), correspondence (1976-1985), legal papers (1979-1986), royalty statements (1980-1987), miscellaneous papers, a copy of the original screenplay, programs (1980-1986), clippings (1982-1986) and files on foreign productions and other American productions. The correspondence includes copies of letters from Stewart to David Merrick regarding progress and changes in the script, changes in the cast, and one letter regarding the payment of royalties to Gower Champion's estate. Also included are letters from Tammy Grimes, Dolores Gray and Bibi Osterwald on leaving the show and an undated letter from Gower Champion explaining his decision to leave the show.
