Material includes schedules and event calendars (program material is also located in the Information Service files- see: Public Services: Information Service: Subject Files, boxes 1832-4). Other records document the organization of Special Days and Weeks, which arranged group discounts and activities. Much of the promotional material prepared for Grover Whalen originated in the office of Daniel Maué, effectively Whalen's press secretary. (Whalen's speeches also appear in the Speeches section below.) Contest files document the Typical American Family competition, in which families selected from 48 states lived on the Fairgrounds for a week. Records include participating family photographs, biographical profiles and medical reports. Other contests represented in this section include Miss World's Fairest, a beauty pageant for Fair and concessions employees, and the Golden Key and Limerick contests, which gave away automobiles. Pre-Fair records cover promotional activities before the 1939 opening, including the official poster competition, dedication ceremonies, Fair-themed balls and traveling site models. The 1938 Preview and Motorcade files include designs and photographs of floats used in the Preview parade. Transcripts of speeches include those by Franklin D. Roosevelt on Opening Day; Grover Whalen honoring Mussolini at the Italian Pavilion; exiled Czech president Edvard Beneš at the opening of the Czechoslovakian Pavilion; J. Edgar Hoover speaking to the boy scouts on cleaning up political corruption; and Albert Einstein at the Jewish-Palestinian Pavilion opening. Prevalent speech topics were democracy, patriotism, and the European crisis.</p>"}
