{"value"=>"<p>Eleanor Livingston Phelps was the daughter of Susan Maria Field (sister of William Hazard and Osgood Field) and John Augustus Pell. She married Charles Harris Phelps in 1878, but left him in 1884 due to his cruel and controlling nature. Her parents did their best to keep her from returning to him, including adding provisions in their wills (1893-1895) as to where she must live, which could only be removed if she officially divorced her husband. Eleanor made agreements with Phelps regarding money, despite the fact that he consistently asked for more. She divorced him in 1911 after many public scandals about her marriage.</p> <p>These letters consist of Phelps' requests of advice from her uncle, Osgood Field.</p>"}
