{"value"=>"<p>Lola Maverick Lloyd's family correspondence ranges from 1893 through 1944. The materials contain letters and telegrams from both Mavericks and Lloyds, as well as from members of other related families. The correspondence is arranged by author, then chronologically within. A fair number of letters include enclosures from other family members, forwarded on by the original recipients for Lola's perusal. For outgoing correspondence from Lola Maverick Lloyd to her children or other family members, see the collections of those individuals.</p> <p>While the items in this series are more personal in nature, Lola's interests and political involvements are well documented. Her involvement in WILPF and League of Nations efforts are referred to on occasion, usually in the context of reports to family members on progress made or difficulties encountered. Lola and her most frequent correspondents appeared to write weekly, and in some cases, almost daily. She maintained especially close ties with two of her sisters: Augusta Maverick Kelley, and Mary Maverick Green, usually addressed as \"Rena.\" Many of the family members used nicknames, in some cases to the exclusion of their real names. These letters offer insight into the personality of each child, as well as testify to the closeness between Lola and her children. In addition, the letters document the life of a woman of her social position during the first half of the Twentieth Century. Recurring themes and topics of discussion demonstrate ways in which Lola was typical of her class, as well as how far she deviated from traditional expectations of well-to-do women, and include: her near-constant travel around the United States and abroad; political lobbying and organizing; her artistic efforts and projects, including work on her house in Winnetka, Illinois; discussion of servants, recipes, and household chores; gossip regarding society friends; conflicts with William Bross Lloyd over the custody and care of their children; her own concerns over the education and well-being of the children; discussion of progressive ideas in a variety of political venues; and ongoing conversations about her children's own families and professional careers, in particular musings over the desirability (or lack thereof) of marriage and children.</p> <p>Of further interest is the fact that Lola appears to have maintained contact with several members of her ex-husband's family following their divorce, in particular Caroline Lloyd Strobell, who was herself active in labor and Socialist circles.</p> <p>The series is concluded by folders of letters from miscellaneous correspondents, letters from unidentified correspondents, and unattributed telegrams.</p> <p>Prominent and significant correspondents include: Caro Lloyd Strobell, William Bross Lloyd, Henry Demarest Lloyd, Jessie Lloyd O'Connor, and Harvey O'Connor.</p>"}
