{"value"=>"<p>This chronological series consists of letters Lola Maverick Lloyd received from friends and professional acquaintances between the years 1895 and 1944, and letters to her family following her death. These materials document her activities and ideas, as well as personal relationships with pacifists, suffragists, and other radicals in the United States and abroad. A significant number of letters received from Rosika Schwimmer offer a unique window into the relationship and characters of these two women, as well as the internal politics of the feminist and pacifist movements in the first half of the twentieth century.</p> <p>Frequent subjects of correspondence include the Ford Peace Expedition of 1915, and the following Neutral Conference for Continuous Mediation; activities of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF); the National Woman's Party; the formation and early efforts of the League of Nations; and several congressional lobbying groups and bills, in particular the Griffin Bill Committee. Other subjects include Lola's meetings with Albert Einstein regarding pacifism, including the Einstein peace receptions she coordinated in 1931 and 1933; the Rosika Schwimmer Peace Prize Campaign; and the general business and upkeep of the Maverick Ranch in San Antonio, Texas. Broader topics include world government; woman suffrage; minorities in the United States and abroad; civil rights and the citizenship rights of conscientious objectors and other radicals; refugees post-World War II; alternative education; and global events such as the Spanish Civil War and the Italian invasion of Ethiopia.</p> <p>There is a small amount of outgoing correspondence present, generally in response to incoming letters. Of additional interest are the numerous handwritten notes jotted by Lola on the envelopes of letters she received. Occasional enclosures of circulars and reports are included in this series; however a large portion of these materials were removed to Series VI. Printed material. While some letters from family members are present in this series--generally related to Lola's professional activities -- the bulk of such family-related materials reside in Subseries B. Family correspondence. However, this series does include letters, program materials, and articles exchanged between Lola and her son, William Bross Lloyd, Jr., pertaining to the Campaign for World Government.</p> <p>The subseries ends with materials related to Lola's death in July of 1944. These include a file of biographical materials on Lola, some of which were tributes written after her passing; memorial service ephemera and mailings; condolence letters addressed to her children--some as late as 1949;
