{"value"=>"<p>The People With AIDS Coalition (PWA Coalition / PWAC), a non-profit organization incorporated in New York State, was founded in New York City in 1985 by a group of some nine persons all of whom had contracted AIDS. They hoped to combat the atmosphere of ignorance, fear, and hostility which attended the development of the disease from its onset. They adopted the acronyms “PWA(s)” for Person(s) with AIDS and PWARC(s) for Person(s) with AIDS Related Complex, to replace what they regarded as pejorative stereotypes (“victims”, “sufferers”, “patients”) commonly employed by the mass media when referring to persons living with AIDS or HIV.</p> <p>See the People with AIDS Coalition Records, Manuscripts and Archives Division, The New York Public Library (http://www.nypl.org/research/chss/spe/rbk/faids/pwac.pdf)</p>"}
