{"value"=>"<p>Chaired by John Hays Hammond, this department was commissioned by the Executive Council to prepare questionnaires for a survey of industrial, social and civic progress similar to a previous survey prepared by the Industrial Economics Department (see below) in 1912-1914.</p> <p>The files consist primarily of correspondence dealing with the progress survey, some of it seeking help from universities in defining the needs of the survey, and some with corporate directors of personnel or welfare, requesting information on their respective programs to improve the living and working conditions of industrial employees and to ensure their physical and moral welfare. Among the corporations contacted were the Atlantic Refining Company, Anaconda Copper Mining Company, Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, Eastman Kodak, Equitable Life Assurance Society, International Harvester Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, Swift & Company, and The <span class=\"title\">New York Times</span>.</p>"}
